steve moore has said that they have broken their words and our bank as well. steve, if you think about it, that is the essence of this problem. government has gotten so big and so cool clueless and inept. >> by the way, as you said, it is not just the government. it is big labor. >> yes, it is. >> it is not youupersonally. here's the point that i would make about these negative reactions government right now. i have been in this business a long time. about 25 or 30 years. when i have noticed is that the public approval ratings from government in washington is inversely related to how big it is. so anytime you see a big bulge in government spending, like we have seen in the last or four years. it is not uncommon for people to become disillusioned with the promise of big government and those posed to fall drastically. that is a fact that we are doing here. we'll trying to do too much and people don't see it working. therefore it is falling down. >> at first it was a little sad for me to think about my fellow americans to think so pessimistically about our system

steve moore, part of the editorial board of the "wall street journal." what are your thoughts?ect for jonathan, i am a civil libertarian and i think the big issue here is the balance between freedom and safety. that is really what we're debating here. now, jonathan said at the end there, what kind of country do we want to live in? that is great way to frame the issue. look, i believe that a lot of these techniques that are being used by our counter-terrorism units are actually working. we know they have foiled in the past some terrorism incidents. what i would suggest is people to think about when we think about what kind of country do we want to live in? do we want to live in where schools are bound and shopping centers are bombed and like the world trade center. that is the kind of world we live in. this may deter those events from happening. >> megyn: what do you make of the fact it had been reported back in 2006. we looked back to say in the wake of the report. president bush did not acknowledge the problem but talked about how anything we do has been authorized by a court.

rick: steve moore is senior economics writer for "the wall street journal". see you. >> hi, rick. great to be with you. rick: is the speaker right? >> he's right spot on, rick. and, you know, i would add that you probably couldn't build the interstate highway system today in the regulatory environment that exists in washington. you, i'm sure you could not build the great alaska pipeline that was built in the late 1970s and 1980s. and even major airports and infrastructure projects like the reagan national airport in laguardia in new york where you are, those would be extremely difficult and costly to build because of federal rules and red tape and especially all of the green regulations that are so persistent today in washington. rick: well, it's not just regulation though, steve, it's money too. and congress holds the pursestrings. and this is a headline from november of 2011: senate republicans block the president's $60 billion infrastructure that was aimed at exactly the types of projects that you were just mentioning, highways, rails, airports. so it seem

we'll go to steve moore and melissa francis. it's always in the eyes of beholder. what do you make of it? >> absolutely. i watched the whole thing live. if you try to kror correlate with what he said, it's like readying tea leaves. it's important thing to notice, we saw stocks sold off and bonds sold off. that is not usual. what it tells you the market doesn't have a lot of confidence in the dismount strategy. as we get closer they are not convinced the feds can hold on to it. we can hold on to mortgaged backed securities but i don't think the marketed thinks that is going to smooth things out enough. >> neil: there is that soft landing we got to do here. that is dicey game. the markets fear to her pointed that he is not going to be able to pull it off. >> you said that you need to read the tea leaves, you need a decoder. what i heard ben bernanke saying loud and clear was this plan of asset purchases, your viewers should know the fed has purchased $3.6 trillion of assets over the last four years. it did not say it's going to take the punch bowl away. your cups are

senior economics writer for "the wall street journal" steve moore is joining us. some of the top economists in the country have different ideas about the mission at hand, to bring unemployment down. so why such a difference of opinion? >> well, jenna, i'm a top economist -- [laughter] jenna: that's right. that's why we're talking to you, steve. [laughter] >> look, i think the higher number is much closer to the truth. you know, let's just talk about where we are right now, jenna, with jobs. you know, the unemployment rate's 7.6%. if you count people who have given up looking for a job and you count people which is an increasing number who can't find a full-time job, jenna, you're talking about close to 20 million people. i think the real unemployment rate in this country is this broader measure which is closer to 14%, not 7.5 percent. now, by my calculations, jenna, i believe we have to about double the number of jobs we've been crating for the last year. we've been about 175,000 jobs a month, we need closer to 300 to 350,000 to start really making a dent in that
