pat. >> we're going to go steve liesman. we'll be back to you in just a second, bur our senior economics reporter is taking a look at the u.s. growth picture. it stayed strong despite all of the market volatility. steve, up to you? >> all this market volatility, concern about economic weakness, we continue to track the u.s. economy at a stubbornly strong 3.1% growth rate in the third quarter, according to the rapid update. the rapid update is the average of ten wall street economists tracking forecasts, so it changes as the data comes in. but the number remain fairly stable. take a look here. if the forecast holds, it would be the fourth quarter north of 3%, except in the one negative -- in the first quarter that people think was weather-related, still pitling over that. say around 2.5%, because that's a number that puts the unemployed back to work. over the past several months, up 3 to 3.5, and jobs numbers, down by the weak retail sales reports this morning more gh news on the jobs prospect. but that's the sixth week in a

it's a little bit bigger margin steve, than in other polls, but it is consistent with other polls in this respect. pathe high 30s to the low 40s for months, and he hasn't been able to reset the race or break out in any way. he has not been able to find a way to give kansas voters to give him another look. you know he's been in office since 1981. if an incumbent republican in a republican state is stuck in the high 30s or the low 40s, he's got lots of work to do. and he's running out of time to do it. >> it's an amazing number. now, the second high-profile race in kansas kansas the political election capital of america this year. so there's a second high-profile, and that is sam brownback, republican governor. and we have a number in that race now. paul davis democratic challenger, barely ahead. ahead by a point there, 44-43, basically within the margin of error. what is your sense right now, dave, of the state of that race? >> you get the sense that first of all, the pat roberts/greg orman race has really sucked a lot of the oxygen out of the davis/brownback race. a lot less focus on that. so there ma

pat roberts. meaning a tradition that stood for a century and a half could be broken on tuesday night. joining me now is the host of msnbc's "up" steveornacki and howard fieinman. steve b i want to ask you a question. the question of a split ticket in terms of you vote for a democrat for governor and maybe a republican from the senate. that happens, i guess, in kansas. >> it may. although to the extent it does, it's going to be very limited. i think the logic behind it would be it's a republican state. it's a state that voted for mitt romney. such a republican state that how many times can these republican voters, these republican friendly voters bear to leave the republican column when standing in the -- >> polarizing in the state. >> he is also in trouble. so there are actually three competitive statewide elections where republicans are in danger of losing. i think most people are going to make it in the first two and maybe in the second race where they're going to, you know, they'll go either all republican or all democratic. but to the extent you do have crossover stuff happening there, i think it's that. it's republican who is i

pat roberts. joining us is dave helling, political report we are the kansas city star. thanks for being with us. >> good afternoon, steve. great to be with you. >> a lot of developments in the race, including that yesterday of a new poll showing the race is very close. senator roberts is behind. tell us what's happening. >> he's been behind consistently in polls throughout the year. he ran, as you may know, your audience may know, he was involved in a very, very aggressive primary in the state of kansas in august against a tea party candidate named milton wolf. in that race pat roberts, who by the way, has been a fixture of kansas politics since 1980 received 48% of the vote in his own party. at that point i think a lot of people began to say look, this guy may face some serious concerns from the people of kansas if he can't do better than that within his own party. that's sort of the picture on the ground on his side. then he's opposing a guy now named greg orman, an independent running a campaign that says, i'm not a republican or a democrat. i can vote for the best idea. i'm a problem solver. and that does have some

steve mckee, a longtime friend. another friend, a graduate of the clinton school public land ce. candidate for commissioner, mark robinson. i appreciate your support. i'm for pat hayes, ross, for mark pryor. was a hilarious headline website called "real clear politics" saying that clinton to the briar patch, arkansas, his obsession. but somebody said, he goes back there all the time. some family members recently. i'm about to go back my 50th high school reunion. i hate that, but there it is. i love my native state. without you, i would never have had the chance to do anything. i did back to the briar the h, i came back to future of america, because that is what this is. i want g day i to say is, that these polls are all over the place. here is a little secret about polls. they on all correct. it depends poll. was the percentage of people by age who are going to vote? here with clipboards going e we are here and to other campuses. historically and other years there's been a big drop-off in the youth vote. the opponents of these candidates are betting there will be this year. and i'm betting there will not be. it's up to you. nobody has a this than you n do. so
