joining me now from the english town of essex is nbc news correspondent steve patterson. n this story first came across and i looked at it, i didn't even know what to make of it. what if anything do we know about the people who died and why they were in a truck trailer? >> reporter: very little at this point, ali. but that is exactly the work that is being done right now. that is the entire focus of the essex police department. not too long ago that tractor-trailer was hauled away from the scene. it will be taken to a local docks facility where it will be processed. and the he meticulous work of crews who will have to pull out those bodies one by one obviously to aid in the identification process, give solace to families, but also hopefully that will lead to answers on just what exactly happened here. meanwhile, the focus of the investigation is going to move to an international focus. police haven't sort of identified or talked about where that's leading next but the clear sort of prevailing theory is that this is going to have to do with international human trafficking.

joining me now is nbc's steve patterson live on the ground in semi-valley. steve, you said when you got there this morning, it was about 500 acres big and now it's over 1,000. >> 500 acres and now it's broken that 1,000 acre mark. now, 1,300 acres. threatening some 6,500 homes. the part of which we can actually show you below. there is a war down here. take a look at this valley. you can see home after home bisected by these plumes of dark to white smoke. those are all fires. you're not going to be able to see them entirely from up here and they've been dropping on them constantly. but those are all firefighters that firefighters are either dispatched to dealing with or trying to let burn as they've cut and broken down some lines here between some of the plumes of intense heat that these fires are giving. off in the distance, there's another helicopter that is coming. we've seen this constantly. maybe every four to five minutes, there will be another drop from the reservoir below. they bring up some of that water and then try to douse as much as they can. but
