nbc news correspondent steve patterson live in mary park right now. arge. how much do we know about anything to do a motivation who the suspect -- and what else we've gathered? >> elliott, this, point it's all on investigation. the scene has remained mostly static since we've been here. police keeping a hold on the scene with that suspect is still a large. according to police -- ten dead. another ten wounded. these numbers expected to change those wounded. ranging from staple to very critical at this hour. shots ringing out again as you mention about ten, 20 or so late last night. this is following the new ludmila celebration that was in place yesterday. thousands of people on the streets expected again today. it was canceled came down a few moments ago -- police out of an abundance of caution but also other respect for the victims here as well. we just don't know anything about motive. we don't know anything really about the weaponry that was used. we don't know anything about if this was targeted or indiscriminate or if it was fire inside or outside.

we see steve patterson following the latest on the investigation for a. steve, what are we learning from the suspect's defense attorney? >> cory, a whole lot more from this public defender. the key piece of which you've made a reference to that -- his client is choosing to waive an upcoming extradition hearing. which means as you said he could be facing justice in idaho. that court system is early as next week. which would mean that the sealed affidavit should only be unsealed upon his arrival back to idaho. the details of which we would know. which would may shed more light on a possible motive. details of this case that were formally sealed. also learning a lot more about this public defender. some key piece of information in a conversation that he says he's now had with his client. that one -- coburg or was eager to be exonerated. that he was aware of the details of the case before all of this happened. that he's been calm. that he is shocked by his arrest. our colleague gave an interview with this public defender. who shed more light on the case. here'

joining me now from monterey park, california, nbc news correspondent, steve patterson.or being here. we know nbc got exclusivity of the heroic acts of the young man who pulled the gun away from the shooter, but what do we know about the now deceased attacker of these two clubs? >> a lot more, joy. about 10 or 15 minutes ago there was an updated sheriff's department press release that told us a wellspring of information about the shooter and about the incidents surrounding the shooting itself and it's more important to start with what we don't know and what we weren't told which is what the primary question and focus of this investigation has to be at this point, which is, why. nothing so far on the motive. police alluded to certain things and targets that may have been insight of the ballroom behind me that the shooter may have known, but they are not making those connections at this point. they did tell us a lot about a storch search warrant executed at the shooter's nearby home and they recovered a lot of materials related to the shooting. one of them at 308 rifle. co

steve patterson is in monterey park. just a matter of days ago.they anticipate the vice president's visit, how is that community coping? >> reporter: i'll be honest with you. it's very difficult. i think in many ways this community is shattered. you have to take everything together. the victims, 57 to 76 years old, in many ways elders and pillars of their community we have spoke ton people who knew the victims. they are heartbroken. the place this happened as of just a few years ago raided by many magazine is one of the best places to raise them. they are not used to violence. the time this happened on one of most cultural significant times to the aapi community on the low senator new year to a community that is 65% asian-american. an asian man himself who is 72 years old does thot fit the profile of a mass shooter. and while we have heard rumors about a motive and while police are closer this their investigation to figuring out a motive, people here still don't know why. that's all very hard to square together. we spoke to people at a vigil about

steve patterson is here as well. steve, what is the latest on the investigation there?reporter: so many questions, jose, but i think it is fair to say that investigators know the nuts and bolts. this 72-year-old suspect, huu can tran, entered this ballroom after 10:00, shooting 20, killing ten and wounding ten, and then moving on to alhambra, a similar-style ballroom where investigators believe he planned to do the same thing. thanks to the heroic actions of that man in his 20s, he's disarmed. the weapon, a semi-automatic assault-style pistol with an extended magazine. illegal in california. we know investigators used it to trace to the suspect, including the white van spotted at the scene, traced to torrance where he was cornered and found with the self-inflicted gunshot wound. the question becomes, as it always does in so many cases, at this point why. we know investigators have search warrants for the suspect's home in hemet, california. they will be serving those warrants. obviously with the suspect's age and connection to the community, his ex-wife saying they met

nbc news correspondent steve patterson is joining us now. steve, this has to be a tough day for some of these kids. how is the community dealing with this and feeling as they return to campus? >> tough day. a lot of students chose to stay home past the semester break not coming back to campus because they were worried what was happening. there was fear percolating and anxiety. some of that now, of course, has been alleviated. the students are coming back with a suspect in custody. that makes a big difference. there's no doubt about it. still, though, i've been looking at some of the interviews our colleague stephanie gosk has done and our digital team students not only at the university of idaho but where kohberger was taking classes a lot of people saying that, you know, some of that anxiety is relieved but more saying that they are remaining vigilant, they're taking defense classes, they're buying pepper spray, that they are vigilant about where they're going and who they're with and what time of the day they're going. i don't think that is

. >> reporter: nbc news correspondent steve patterson joins me now. he is also in monterey park, california. steve, loved ones really still trying to process all of this tragedy. what are we learning about the victims, those we've just learned the names of? >> reporter: yeah. first of all, it is that unfortunate breaking news that you've just reported. we're getting this from l.a. county -- county usc, they have treated four of the patients, one as you mentioned just unfortunately died. they're also reporting that two are now recovering, and there's one additional victim in serious condition. obviously we're learning more about the victims, the tragedy that happened inside ballroom. we're learning about the age range. i think one of the most striking things when you hear it -- 50 to 70 years old. and now one additional victim on top of that. thankfully three we know have fully recovered, as well, from the ten that we heard were wounded in the first place. the coroner starting to report some of the names to the family members, confirming to those famili

to moscow, idaho, where we find nbc's steve patterson. classes are also resuming there. what have we learned? and what is it like out will? >> reporter: yes, i mean, he was in court for all of 15 minutes or so. this was a very preliminary status hearing, meant to essentially, you know, set the next date of when this court proceeding will keep going, essentially. so the big headline that you need to take away from this is that he was asked if he would need a speedy preliminary hearing, which would be in the next 14 days, he waived that, so instead of 14 days, six months, when the preliminary hearing takes place and it is important to know we will learn more about the judicial process, and both sides will have witnesses, and both sides may present new evidence and so the attorneys for koebz wanted some time for the discovery process to play out, so they could learn more for that hearing. meanwhile, as you mentioned, you know, campus classes are back, students are back, i think it is a mixed bag to answer your question, katy, i think a lot o

nbc news correspondent steve patterson is following this story.w questions about the time that he spent behind bars. what have you learned? >> troubling story about all this. troubling to hear about the criminal past and the sentence he was supposed to serve, kate. we know he was scheduled to stay in prison for an extended amount of time for the last time this happened. he reportedly strangled will his ex-girlfriend in 2017. served time for that. got off early for that because of a plea-bargain. the same thing happened in 2019. he was supposeded to serve time, about 2 1/2 years, only served maybe a few days if that because of a plae plea-bargain and time served while awaiting a sentence to remind you of that case, police say they found a woman who had seven broken ribs, two black eyes and abrasions on her wrist because tied down for weeks. so police don't want to repeat that. they say this man is armed. he is dangerous. people should stay away. but also they're asking for the public to help track him down. >> what are police saying about the state

steve patterson is following the latest from moscow, idaho.eliminary hearing and what happens next? >> reporter: a few important things to note. this was not a speedy preliminary hearing, it would have been in the next 14 days or so. instead it's in the next few months, six months to be exact. june 26th is when that date will be. it's important to recognize a few things. the preliminary hearing is a huge part of the judicial process. we're probably going to hear witnesses from both sides, probably going to have new evidence that's admitted or at least looked at and the judge has to make a decision about going to trial. so it's a big step. so what we, you know, have heard from attorneys for kohberger is they want more time for the discovery process to play out so they can gather that information and they're more knowledgeable about the case and the facts of the case. >> we're learning more about the suspect's past, some reporting about his time as a graduate student at washington state university miles away from where you are at at the universi

and he's steve patterson reports. >> yeah, 28 year old brian coburg are now in custody.en into custody some 2500 miles away in his home state of northern pennsylvania. brought in at about 3:00 in the morning. his family telling police essentially that they were cooperative but they were taken aback by the arrest. now we're getting new details as coburg or has spoken to his attorney. in the details of that conversation, we now understand something major, he is waving his right to it expedition hearing, he is not choosing to fight extradition, what that means is he will come back to idaho much more swiftly than expected and will face justice. in that, that means the affidavit, the probable cause affidavit was a sealed until he came back to the state. now that he is coming back, we should know more details about what police know, possibly about a motive, possibly about a murder weapon, possibly about a new details on the case. in relation that he may have had to those of victims. meanwhile, police saying this is unequivocal-y absolutely their man. this is the sole suspect a

steve patterson, this is such a hard story to cover. thank you so much for doing it so valiantly. i want to bring in monterey park city councilman, thomas won, and our colleague, clint watts, former fbi special agent in msnbc national security analyst. thomas, i'm so sorry for what your community is facing. it's not just over 48 hours after the shooting. how are people they're grappling with this? >> as was noted earlier, i think we're just starting the morning period. i'm right outside -- right outside where i'm sitting is where the first vigil, a series of vigils for the community, is occurring. with the shooter stopped yesterday, i think we've been able to do that. but unfortunately, with the other shooting happening just north of us, we want to make sure we send our grief and our thoughts and prayers to the community there as well. -- joins us in the recent rising number of cities and communities that are dealing with mass gun violence. it's just insane. i don't know how us to describe what's going on and how this is affecting our communities in america. >> >> thomas, you grew

let's go to nbc's steve patterson who is on the scene since the wee hours of the morning. teve, welcome. what more can you tell us about this horrific shooting? what have you learned recently? >> top of my, we've just had in your press conference as over the half an hour or so ago, with the l.a. county sheriff's department and with moderate police. with so many more that arrived on the situation representatives and people in this community who really care about this community. top of mind is that the suspect is still at large. they've not gone to their man. and there is no rest and nobody in custody. last with a 31st thing the police are investigating. and then once potential. mediately that message was clear at this press briefing. they do not have anybody in that they are searching as hard as they can all available resources are all going towards finding this person of interest. the shooter believed to be a male. now, we do get a new description of the shooter. before, it was just a male. now police, there are conflicting messages on. this but i want to be clear that poli

steve patterson joins me from moscow, idaho, where kohberger is being held.neasy here. what's the sense in the community and what do we know about tomorrow's hearing? >> reporter: i was here a few weeks ago at the height of the search for the suspect, the fear, anxiety, was palpable. it was so much worse back then. you could see it in their posture, the way they described how they felt when the sun went down after dark. you have to imagine, a lot of that has been alleviated with the fact that police are announcing that a suspect is in custody and the fact that police believe that they have their man. that this is the guy. this is the sole suspect. but despite all that, those same students describe how there's a sense of vigilance. a lot of them have bought mace, taking self-defense classes, a lot of them still walking in pairs on this campus. we spoke to some of those students. we want to play some of the sound for you. listen to what they had to say and we'll talk about the status hearing with kohberger after the jump. >> it's going to take time for me to fe

patterson joins me. also joining me is joyce vance. steve, that court appearance just wrapped.t more do we know about what that was all about? >> reporter: yeah, this was a status hearing. it wrapped just moments ago. kohberger walking out of that courtroom just moments ago. the biggest headline here is that kohberger's attorneys chose to waive a speeding hearing. which means the next step will be on june 26th for that preliminary hearing at 9:00 a.m. it is scheduled to be about four or five days or so. kohberger will be held without bail until that point. we're learning a little bit more about the investigation itself. we've been talking to people, sources close to the investigation who tell us that kohberger really became the sole suspect on december 23rd thanks to dna. and also learning a little bit more about his character, his background himself. our colleagues at dateline spoke to a school-aged schoolmate just about who he was growing up. listen to this. >> when i knew him he didn't have any girlfriends. i didn't think he was talking to any girls. again, he was just very
