steve bannon, has been interviewed for the third time. joining us now is federal prosecutor and cnn's chief legal analyst, jeffrey toobin. based on our own reporting, what bannon has been asked about is rogere's a political figure who was an adviser, and he has been involved in republican politics all the way up to the trump campaign and very close at times to the president. what might robert mueller's team want to know about roger stone? >> i think we know what they want to know, and the question is are they going to build an actual case around it. roger stone in the peak period of the campaign was bragging about what wikileaks or somebody was going to disclose about the clinton campaign, that he apparently knew or claimed to know that the hacked e-mails from the dnc, from john podesta, clinton's former campaign chair, were going to be released and the question is was he an actual intermediary between the trump campaign and the russians. >> what if he did talk to wikileaks, and what if he did know they were going to release the e-mails about paw tkes trau and others? >> it's one thing to know if a crime is going to take place, and it's another thing to conspire or aid and ebbett the crimi

team reinterviewing steve bannon and we've gotten the drip, drip, drip of knews as the office has been largely quiet in terms of the public performance about them zeroing in on roger stone. is that surprising to you or is that where you anticipated this going? >> it's not surprising to me. there are a lot of threads to the mueller investigation. obviously quite a few of them have to do with the issue of collusion or conspiracy. the difficulty with the whole roger stone investigative thread is he dissembles, roger stone, that is, so much and the people around him dissembles so much what is fact and fiction is going to be an enormously challenging task for robert mueller. that's one of the reasons why we encouraged them to provide the stone transcript but certainly there are a lot of suspicious communications that have already been referred to in public for wikileaks which was basically the russian gru unit that was running this clandestine effort so it doesn't surprise me at all, but i think it's really one of only a great many investigative tlesds that mueller has been pursuing. >> one thing that i think has gotten lost a little bit because of the drip, drip, drip
