we're back with steve schmidt and matt miller. want to read a couple of headlines about the different pockets where public servants are really fearing violence and threats. axios is reporting thousands of school board members urged the president to protect them. the national school board association is asking president biden, the fbi, and the secret service to intervene to protect them from the unprecedented threats. in one instance, they describe someone yelling a nazi salute during a michigan school board meeting. another example cites a person being arrested for aggravated battery in illinois. healthcare workers who were once saluted are now being threatened. you hear all sorts of stories in hospitals where they're threatened when they offer a diagnosis of covid. this is some reporting in the a.p. more than a year after u.s. healthcare workers on the front lines against covid were saluted as heroes, some are being issued panic buttons in case of assault and ditching their scrubs before going out in public for fear of harassment

steve schmidt, i want to answer the question first of why this matters. is because this isn't about an opposition party or a minority party that comes to the infrastructure negotiation with a smaller package for preserving and protecting our country's ailing infrastructure. this is about an opposition party, a minority party, that as you, i think, started noting and talking about on and off tv has lurched toward autocratic norms, not democratic norms. so, this sort of gasp of life that former president bush seems to be trying to give liz cheney, even if it fails, does seem to be a tacit acknowledgment that the rest of the party is, at best, off track. at worst, a threat. >> well, let me just say, i think it's a big mistake to frame this race as a contest between a george w. bush faction and a donald trump faction. that debate is over. lock, stock, and barrel, donald trump controls the republican party, and that republican party and all of the evidence is in on this, is a party that is no longer faithful to american democracy, number one. it is an autocrat
