steve: at what point did you realize the gravity of what that day represented? steve: well, -- sen. daschle: well, i think the gravity -- because the magnitude of the problem we could just see the horrific side of people jumping out of windows 100 stories high and seeing the half buried plane in the pentagon on the north side. just all of that occurring so quickly and so overwhelmingly, i think the real question was not the gravity of the circumstances. that we understood. it's just how to address that gravity because it had never happened before. in trying to figure out, where do we go, how do we respond? and how can we provide the kind of leadership that is so necessary in a crisis like that? steve: part of addressing that was to make sure congress was back in session the following day. give us a sense of your conversations with the white house, president bush and others? sen. lott: most of my conversations that day and write after were with cheney. i did subsequently have conversations with president bush and tom and i have talked about the fact that for weeks or maybe months after that, every tuesday we would have breakfast at the white house with the president at 7:00 a.m. and it would be tom and dick gephardt and denny hastert and i. we sometimes had a briefing with the cia but we appreciated the fact that the president had that meeting with us, bipartisan meeting, almost every week. often he would go around the world talking about what was happening and what our allies were doing and what our commitments were. it's a kind of thing that i don't think happens much anymore, but it was so important that you have communication between a president of the united states and the lea
