. >> i am here with pulitzer prize winning author steve toomey, author of his most recent countdown to pearl harbor, 12 days to the attack. december 7th marks the 75th anniversary of the attack on pearl harbor in hawaii. you chronicle several clues and an attack on american soil is going to happen. what was the most significantly ignored warning sign? >> probably the fact that four japanese aircraft carriers were known to be missing and it had long been rumored that japan might use aircraft carriers to attack hawaii. here we had obvious evidence that something might be happening and they thought that did not mean very much in the end and the result is in part due to that. >> host: what was the intelligence like back then? was very strong intelligence system? >> guest: this was the age well before satellites and big listening dishes. it was a very by comparison to today, a very primitive time when it came to intelligence. we basically tried to find out what the other side was doing by listening to their radio signals. it sometimes worked, it sometimes didn't, but it was not nearly as so
