steven hadley knows about the challenges as serving as the senior most foreign policy adviser because for four years he was the adviser to president bush. and he's joining me now from washington. mr. hadley, welcome to the program. >> nice to be here. >> so let's sort of start at the beginning. first and foremost, what do you make of this sort of last-minute surprise visit by kim jong-un to china? what's the strategic picture around that visit? >> well, for china, it's very important because, in some sense, president trump's willingness to meet with kim jong-un had the effect of sidelining china a little bit. this puts china centrally back into the picture. because they, of course, have real interests in how this dispute gets resolved. kim jong-un, it says another thing. even though china joined with the united states and other countries in adopting u.n. security council resolutions that china is still kim jong-un's ally. and finally, both the meeting with president xi and forthcoming meeting with president trump does something for kim jong-un. it puts him on the same level of two of

there's just no way around it. >> steven hadley, a pleasure to have you on. >> nice to be here. >> turninghe press conference down in florida where, obviously, this pedestrian bridge collapsed. awaiting a press conference any moment. i want to bring in cnn regulation correspondent, and the ntsb is going to send down a team. what can you tell us. what's the latest about the bridge that was just erected days ago? >> right. and, i mean, when you look at even the press release from the university announcing that this brid bridge, which will essentially be a foot bridge from an area called sweet water to the campus of fiu, florida international university, they were really excited about the bridge. it was designed to withstand category 5 hurricane. the bridge was made out of self-cleaning concrete. they describe it as an engineering marvel, and then you have these images today, witnesses say it happened so quickly. one minute, the bridge is up, the next, it kracrashes down. we know the latest from the mayor there. at least one person dead, of course, those numbers always change. it's rather ear

steven hadley. thank you for coming on. much appreciated. >> delighted to be here. >>> i want to go to the other big story of the day. so joining me to help is the former u.s. attorney and now an msnbc contributor joyce vance. i want to talk about the mueller subpoena of the trump organization. i think the surprise here is that it was a subpoena and not a request for documents. do you assume -- a request was made and denied and that is why -- what was your reaction to the subpoena aspect of this? >> i think we have to be careful not to make assumptions here but something that we've heard from the trump organization over time is that they were in a cooperative posture with the mueller investigation and sharing documents that were needed. so this news that there is now a subpoena that the subpoena was issued some weeks ago is definitely a different trend. and does it signify anything? it may just be mueller trying to cut square corners. but far more likely it indicates that they need a document of legal significance that offe
