steven jiang is joining me. so the stringent lockdowns just an example of how seriously the chinese government is taking the latest outbreaks even the absolute numbers aren't that massive. >> reporter: that's right. the latest figure we got from the government was 101 new locally confirmed cases recorded on thursday. this obviously pales in comparison to what we are seeing in many other parts of the world, but in this country they hadn't seen this level of infection for months. so across the country local authorities are conducting multiple rounds of mass testing and extensive confidence whenever they see just a handful of cases emerge in their jurisdictions. and increasingly they are reintroducing draconian lockdown measures targeting not just neighborhoods but also entire cities. of course city wide lockdowns are considered in smaller cities. millions of chinese people now again confined to their homes and sometimes ill prepared. and also across the country authorities are introducing a very stringent travel r

steven jiang is following this case for us from beijing. good to see you. so what is the likely next move for schellenberg and what are the ramifications of this case? >> reporter: well, now schellenberg's case goes to the supreme people's court here in china for final review before any execution could be carried out. but a canadian government has already condemned this decision and vowing to engage with chinese officials at the highest level to request clemency for him. for china's critics, this is another example of the so-called hostage diplomacy, something that beijing strongly denied, but worth taking a look at the time line of his case. he was first tried on november 28, 2018 as an accessory to the smuggling of more than 200 kilo grams of meth and he was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison. but he decided to appeal. now, that date is important because a few days later on december 1, a high profile senior executive of huawei was arrested at the vancouver airport by canadian authorities on behalf of the u.s. government for her alleged role in

cnn's senior producer steven jiang is joining us now live.o how will the government in china enforce this and just how bad is gaming addiction in the country? >> reporter: rosemary, enforcement will mostly be carried out by gaming companies which have pledged to implement the new rules. but they also implemented a minor account for very few of their base. and a few weeks ago a major outlet described video games as spirit all spiritual opium and wiping out billions in market value for gaming companies. so this is almost the other shoe dropping. and this is not the first time that the chinese development has tried to limit playtime for minors. back in 2019, they limited to under 18 for 90 minutes per day and three hours during public holidays. and they have also long required real name registration and log-in for all video game. but apparently not enough according to officials because they have received so many complaints from parents who say that gaming addiction has severely impacted the ability of their children to learn, to study, their phy
