for more on this, i'm joined by "new york times" reporter steven lee myers. daniel byman, director of the center for peace and security studies at georgetown university. steven lee myers, let me start with you. two top administration officials say it was terrorism. one makes a direct link to an al qaeda group but how much and what exactly is known at this point about the attack in benghazi? >> well, i think administration is clearly trying to learn more. from the first day they've launched an investigation headed by the f.b.i., of course. then you have an internal review. and they've been very careful not to jump to conclusions, if you will. and that's led them to sort of change-- not change, evolve their story a little bit each day. you learn a little bit more. the question of whether or not it was a terrorist attack. initially it seemed to be more of a mob or riot that was prompted by the video that's been circulating and causing protests across the region. that now seems not to have been the case. it seems to have been a much more organized attack that was

lee, we'll check in with you throughout the hour. >>> the worst protesters were in benghazi, that's where ama basder christopher stevens and three other americans were killed in attacks on the u.s. consulate. she joins us now over the phone. jamano what is the libyan government saying about that attack? >> well, victor, it does seem now this protest was not really a protest about this film, it was more of a planned attack. what we're hearing from libyan government officials is what we initially heard from u.s. officials. this was a preplanned attack by extremist groups, islamist radical groups that operate in the eastern part of the country. yesterday we heard from the president's ruling saying that they now believe it is a preplanned attack by these groups that aim aed to inflict maximum damage on western interest, especially u.s. interest in libya and sabotage libyan and u.s. relations. the libyan government now saying this investigation is its top priority. they have made a number of arrests. they have four people in custody, at least so far, who are being interrogated and they are looking into links of these people to the extremis

lee live in cairo. i want to move on the lebanon. we're learning more about the attacks in benghazi that resulted in the death of chris stevens and three of his colleagues. sean smith was online the night of the attack. he sent messages one of them to a friend online. while protesters were gathering outside of the consulate and he said this. assuming we don't die tonight. we saw one of our "unquote police that guard the compound taking pictures. cnn armand damon joins us now. you had a chance to walk through that compound. give me a feel for what you've seen, what you witnessed in the aftermath of these murders. >> reporter: it really is quite chilling to be standing inside that compound, even with the bare information we have trying to piece together the events that transpired there on tuesday. the buildings are gutted. they have been burned. there's black soot across many of the walls. there's debris littering the floors. there's some -- we spoke with a security guard, a libyan security guard and even though he said the security guard is only armed with a radio who was manning one of the main entrances into the consulate compound and

lee, thank. we want to go to libya now. sources tracking militant islamic groups in the eastern part of the country they say the attack that killed chris stevens and three other americans was most likely carried out by a pro-al qaeda group. here's the latest from tripoli. >> reporter: as it becomes more apparent that the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi was a preplanned coordinated attack carried out by islamist radical groups, militants operating in the eastern part of the country, the big question is what will the libyan government do next. we heard strong words of condemnation coming out here. the president of the libyan parliament yesterday saying they will not let people stage attacks against western targets. but the big question is will they actually do anything beyond these words. we have seen attacks in recent months targeting western interests in and around the city of benghazi, but little was done to bring the perpetrators of these attacks to justice, although the government now is vowing that they will bring those responsible for tuesday's attack to justice. but the government does know who these groups are, they're aware of
