steven newman, ceo of transocean, the company that operated the deepwater horizon rig. this is about five hours. >> we are meeting to continue the explosion and sinking of the oil rig and the continuing oil spill. damage to both the economy and the environment. many of the elements of this strategy -- of this tragedy are familiar to the committee. bp was in charge in the drilling in the gulf, has a history of prior spills from pipelines, and i cannot doubt whether the company has a commitment to the practice and culture of safety necessary to protect the public. in march 2006, bp was responsible for the worst spill in the history of oil development on alaska's north slope, a subject of discussion and inquiry in this committee. this bill went undetected for five days. bp ignored four alarms on their system indicating that there was a leak. a federal investigation established that bp had not established programs for required maintenance or programs for internal maintenance in the pipeline. they ordered bp to replace the lines. admiral barrett, the retired admiral of the c
