steven scully: how so? by 1975, the cia which has, for most of its existence, been trying to avoid permanent congressional investigation of its activities, finds itself under investigation by two different committees in the two houses of congress. the church committee and the pike committee. that really turned out a lot of the cia's -- i don't want to call it during laundry. dirty laundry. there is a cia report that was a collection of questionable cia activities that went on from 1959 until 1972. because therely is a greater willingness on the part of the press to challenge the cia. the entire thing starts because 1974,r hersh, in december publishes a story about the cia has a massive- domestic surveillance campaign going on in the united states which is a direct contravention of the agency charter as it is prohibited from operating within the confines of the united states. on c-span radio a couple of weeks ago we played the audio of senator church from idaho. and if you listen to what you said back then a

o'brien, and it was a very, very grim assessment by steven o'brien.ned from syria a little over a week ago. he was there when the government air strikes hit a marketplace outside of duma, killing over 100 people, so he has a very fresh and recent perspective on the humanitarian situation there. he said that there are currently 4.6 million syrians living in hard to reach or besieged areas in the country. of those, he said the u.n. has only been able to get food aid to about 12% of those people, and he said the underhas only been able to get medical aid to less than 5% of those 4.6 million living in hard-to-reach places. he said in the past month violence has continued to escalate across the country. he said 7.6 million people have been displaced in the country, including one million this year alone. but these are numbers, but behind each number is a real human story of suffering. there's a humanitarian crisis going on there, and nowhere is it seen more than in the refugee crisis. let's listen more about what steven o'brien had to say specifically about

the and the trooper, steven vincent is out and about doing his job. he notices that there is a vehicle in a ditch. it fits the description. he goes out to see what's going on. and this is where investigators say the situation escalated. authorities tell us that, that suspect, 54-year-old kevin daigle pulls out a shotgun, shoots that trooper in the head. now there are people nearby and good samaritans actually go to his rescue. and they subdue the suspect right there on the scene. and, and actually handcuff him with the trooper's handcuffs. now, of course, he is now charged with first degree murder. and don, we hear from authorities that those charges could grow as they continue to investigate this other killing inside this house. still very early in that investigation. so we, of course, are waiting for more details from investigators. as for the trooper's family, don, he's survived by his wife, and a 9-year-old son. >> rosa flores. thank you. the governor of louisiana, bobby jindal, ordering flags flown at half staff until friday for the death of troo

steven simon, how much is understood about what is going on in these muslim communities in the west?well, it's difficult to get access to these communities, the point that is usually underscored in conversations with european law enforcement and intelligence officials because these communities are as mona said quite closely nit. a lot of this stuff happens in the environment of a mosque which is difficult to pen straight if you are not part of the community. so things are a bit murky. but i think there's-- the general trend is fairly well understood. i don't think it's a huge mystery. in the case of these young women, i think what we just heard was quite right, namely that what is pulling these young women to syria is the same thing that pulls young men. there's nothing, you know, specific to the situation of these women or their desires or their habits or their patterns of thought that differs all that much in terms of their recruit ability, that differs all that much from their brethren. >> woodruff: mona el-naggar, and a again we should say that they estimate 4,000 western young p
