stevenson was convinced he could beat nixon.the most visible democrat because of his previous attempts at running for the presidency, stevenson was well traveled around the world, and spoke with world leaders all over the place. he was the darling of the liberal wing, particularly women who said that they felt "madly for adlai." he polled well among democrats but the party leaders were skeptical he could win in november. in 1956, stevenson promised not to run a third time. his only viable strategy therefore was to make himself available and hope for a deadlocked convention, then to accept a draft. he kept himself constantly in the news, including a springtime 1960 highly publicized trip to latin america with the press following along. he accumulated quiet backroom pledges of support based on his population with that popularity with liberals in the quarter. party leaders considered age 43 of kennedy to be too young. if elected, he would be the youngest ever elected president. the youngest was teddy roosevelt, but he got there by

. >> stevenson, iappreciated your comments . dhaving served as a law clerk myself, i know there's a special bond relationship between a law clerk and the judge or justice or the law clerk he's working for. one of the reasons for that is your able to interact with the jurists on a day-to-day basis. not only in seeing in your case to have judge kavanaugh interacts with his law clerks but also how he interacted with his colleagues. what can you tell us about what you saw and how that would portend for how he would interact with colleagues regardless of their backgrounds and regardless of what some people might identify as their political ideologies? >> certainly, senator. the dc circuit court of appeals is composed of judges who have diaper views on political jurisprudence but their views of judge kavanaugh are not diverse. instead, they uniformly respect him, they appreciate his collegiality, his hard work and ultimately, the fact that he's a straight shooter. are always going to be disagreements but those are disagreements he has
