i read a book by a woman by the name of augusta stevenson, a childhood series for ten and 12-year-olds, it got me hooked to lincoln at a young age, i had lincoln paraphernalia on the walls of my room growing up. he's intimidating. i never dare to write about him. i did a couple of 19th century bucks. i was part of a series of short presidential biographies, and i got martin van year in and there's a memorable encounter between him and lincoln in the early 18 forties. that i described in my book. a lot of years went by and i became a white house speech writer, some went to my surprise because i was already namely in academic. and yet, i was doing a little bit of freelance journalism, so i was a writer with several different voices. i was always fighting a little bit against my academic voice and i'm happy to say, i think that i finally, with this book, was able to tell a more of a story and less of an academic history which not everyone wants to do that, but i did want to do that. and he took me a long time to figure out how to do that. in the way that happened was the disunion series w

he and stevenson is wondering what kind of evidence you found, if any, veterans taking opioids to treatpsychological elements as opposed to the physical elements that you focused on your top? >> this is a great question. i think one of the recent transfer historians has been to look at these psychological wounds that came out of the civil war. after the civil war in the 18 sixties and 18 seventies, there was a spike in suicides in the u.s., for example. so that suggested the veteran suffered from things like depression, post-traumatic stress disorder. i've spent a lot of time looking in mental asylum records, like the asylum and spent, in western state. and you see the same kinds of things in those sources. so, when you look hard enough, you start to realize that some civil war veterans did self medicate for what appeared to have been things like depression, things like post-traumatic stress disorder. for example, there is one guy that i read about my book called george. but this guy, george, was described by a group of civil war surgeons who rode up his case records report for medical

after stevenson elementary i attended other elementaries and i say the names because years from now when't remember what i had for breakfast or my own name i may be able to rattle off the schools i attended but most people will have no idea what schools i'll be talking about. during my 13 years in early ed i've seen us grow and the progress made at the department from people encouraging staff that were surprised to hear the district even had preschool to now attending meetings and hearing don't forget about our pre-k classroom. i'm proud to be part of the team to move this department out of the shadows and have a respect for our leaders in the early ed department. i wouldn't be where i am today without the staff and our principal to colleagues at the office. i know they're still a lot of more work to be done and i'm constantly learning and will continue to try do my best. though my colleagues and central office do not interact directly with families and students in some way or another we're all early educators and since it's the first step in the journey of our students i hope we can con
