bryan stevenson. mr.ryan stevenson is the founder and executive director for the equal justice initiative, a human rights organization in montgomery, alabama. under his leadership, e.j.i. has won major legal challenges, eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prisoners, confronting abuse of the incarcerated in the mentally ill, and aiding children prosecuted as adults. stevenson has argued and won multiple cases at the u.s. supreme court and him and his staff have won reversals, relief -- or release from prison for over 135 wrongly condemned prisoners on death row and won relief of hundreds of others wrongly convicted or unfairly sentenced. we are seeking a journey to reform, and we thank mr. stevenson for being willing to be part of that journey and that victory. ms. marsha levick is a legal chief counsel and co-founder of the juvenile law center. since 1975. and is a nationally recognized expert in juvenile law. she oversees litigation and appellate docket and success

stephanie: professor stevenson, you are a professor of history.at lens, what forces do you see at work that have sometimes pitted blacks and asians against each other this country? prof. stevenson: part of it is a lot of people do not know the history of african-americans or asian americans within this country. and so african-americans sometis do not understand that asian americans have had the very simar kind of discrimination against them and abuses against them because of their race. sometimes asian americans do not understand that african-americans have been, from day one, racialized and criminalized and victimized in this country. and so, there are miscues with regard to what we have in common and what we share. and this common relationship to white supremacy, a common relationship to marginalization, culturally and racially, and all that within the country. and so, without this history, without knowing the kinds of histies in which we absolutely connect and have parallel lives in a nation that is partly defined by othering people who are not

sociologist and fellow at new york university's center for critical race and digital studies; and brenda stevensonof history and african american studies at the university of california los angeles. ladies, thank you so much for joining the "newshour" for this important conversation, and professor stephenson, i want to start with you because the las time i interviewed you we talked about how a broad racial coalition had emerged after the killing of george floyd, and the black lives matter movement growing. as we started to see the increased attacks on asian-americans, i wonder, do you feel that solidarity held or are there still those fractures among communities of color that we saw in los angeles nearly three decades ago? >> well, i think that the answer to that question is both things have occurred. i think the solidarity is certainly holding. many people who are in the african-american community including my family have been very much supportive of the stop hate asian movement and i know many people who are and many people who have not been, indeed some to have the people who have been accused

this wasn't just randall stevenson. john did them too. and to his credit, he's willing to be the one to clean up the mess that he was part of making. and so i think he deserves kudos for that. but make no mistake, it's a mess, and they're just trying to clean up a mess, and it still lees them behind the 8ing-ball. liz: yeah. i knew that you would give the harsh and stark story here. leo, your history with at&t goes way back. liberty's john malone controls discovery. i mean, let's not trick ourselves on now this. this is the second go-round to are malone and at&t. should this be looked at as a john malone saving at&t from itself once again? >> well, liz, it's a pleasure. and, craig, always fun to be on with you. what i like about your comments, liz, is they acknowledge the role of john marrone. all the credit in the -- john malone. all the credit in the world certainly goes to dave zaslov for redefining discovery channel and it assets, but john is behind all of this as you know through his ownership position in discovery. and i think there

police officers were called the stevenson boulevard near. sunday.ve at about 10 30 last night they were responding to a report of a stabbing involving eight people, two adult men and two teenagers were taken into custody. police said in a statement that some people were taken to the hospital but did not provide details on their conditions. authorities did not say what led up to the stabbing. san francisco police are investigating a jewelry store burglary that was caught on cell phone video. hunley videotaped the break in that happened just before 11 a.m. on saturday morning. police say three men broke the front window of the store on washington street near stockton in the city's chinatown. they stole several pieces of jewelry before that, running off the man who took this video noted that the police chief was only a few blocks away at the time visiting chinatown's when this robbery happened. an armed man was arrested and put all this morning following an hours long standoff that led to school closures in the area, as well as the death of a dog. poli

police say it happened at a business on stevenson boulevard around 1030, last night.ficers say the victims were paying at the register when the suspects attacked them. police say the suspects and the victims knew each other. one of the suspects 27 year-old bell coup has been arrested on several charges including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. >> funeral services were held today for andrew brown junior a black man killed by deputies in the controversial shooting in north carolina. the 42 year-old died after being shot last month. deputies have been trying to serve him with a drug-related warrant. they say they were forced to open fire when brown hit them with his car as he tried to get away. brown's family members and they have seen some of the body cam video say he had both hands on the steering wheel. he was not armed. they're demanding justice. >> just know they got has injured. he promised the holy spirit in a complement. and i'll show you as i stand before you today. as doctor king state. just delayed is justice denied. >> an independent autops

of course i believe every democrat running since adlai stevenson, 1952 the newspaper coverage was todestroy reagan. networks were very rough on him in all the years. that's why he used the phrase. there were a number of grants to support the tax cuts, things like that because the white house staff knew they couldn't get a fair shake in the media so he faced a very hostile media and that was probably as hostile as trump because it tempered the media as less prevalent today for issues like individual shows and things like that were much more respectful on the side of the aisle than they are today. now they are just downright hostile "washington post," "new york times" which is why alternative media is growing up around the three networks. fox and warner news and the washington examiner, c-span and other broadcast outlets where people who are on the right feel like they can get a fair shake to tell the point of view without being filtered. >> the author of four biographies on ronald reagan ans a couple more in the works. he's written about world war ii. another one in the works and he's
