mcdowell, edwin sumner, peter heine stillman, nathaniel banks, all generals who opposed mcclellan's strategy one way or another. and he appoints corp. commanders who he knows mcclellan is going to have trouble with. this in turn contributes to dysfunction in the army of the potomac. well, finally on march 9, the army of the potomac advances on manassas only to discover that the confederates had already retreated and there's much derision and criticism of mcclellan on this point. it does undo the urbanna plan. and on march 11, since mcclellan had taken the field, lincoln removes him as general in chief but names no successor. and for the time being, lincoln and stanton and a so-called war council will manage union strategy. so, the urbanna plan is out, mcclellan is no longer general in chief. on march 13, lincoln and his corp. commanders, newly appointed corp. commanders, approve the famous peninsula plan. you have that map there. and on march 17, the first trans ports head out for the virginia peninsula. there's going to be much controversy whether mcclellan had fulfilled his pledge to linco
