that fire breaking out just before 8-oclock this morning on stockton street in the heart of the city'sstoric chinatown neighborhood. kron 4's maureen kelly reports .. even as firefigthers were putting out the fire, other city agencies were stepping in to help the tenants and business owners. the two alarm fire was smoky as it was stubborn....taking firefighters 6 hours to contain.it broke out in the basement of this corner building....with business storefronts facing both stockton...and wrapping around the corner onto pacific. firefighter say what was in the basement made this a hard fire to combat.subdivided storage areas for all of these businesses, refrigerators heavy machinary and freezers and cabinets, tight turns with zero visability.so far they say nothing about the set up down below looked illegal....and at this point the fire doesn't appear suspicious but the investigation into the cause is still ongoing.red cross was on hand tending to the mostly senior residents of the 20 or so single occupancy units located on the upper floor.... making sure they get into temporary shelter
