stoddard, associate editor of the hill. >> it is really puzzling to people that it happened at all.his is something that the press had asked for, democrats had taunted the romney campaign over for a long time, even republicans have said just get it out so it's not a subject anymore. no longer a distraction. so it comes so close to the debate, so close to the election, and actually continues to withhold, the campaign is continuing to withhold information so the release of the 2011 summary and the summarization of the tax rates from the last ten or so years just raises more questions about what is in those returns and what the details actually are. as you pointed out, it's great that he gives so much money to charity, but it is true that he had to forego deductions in order to stay true to the rate of 13% or more that he had previously said he paid. if he had taken advantage of the deductions, he would have paid less. it continues to remind people he makes a lot of money. he doesn't want to provide information about too many years going back. it's puzzling to even republicans about wh

stoddard, the associate editor of "the hill." you've been very critical of mitt romney and comments, the 47% comment that came out on tape earlier this week. he seems to be taking a newer, more, new, more aggressive strategy in the campaign. is that what he needs to do? >> well, i think it's about time. i think adding events to his calendar, going to the battleground where this election will be decided is really important. i also think mitt romney, as he adds this new seam of government dependency versus economic opportunity to his stump speech which is knew if you've been listening to the stump speech all along he has to find a way to talk about job creation because who are the new voters he needs to get under his coalition? he secured the vote of all americans who are disappointed enough in president obama's record that they want to vote against him whether they like mitt romney or not. those votes are in the bag. he has to win this election, winning over remaining undecideds. to secure the votes he will have to talk about job

stoddard of the hill. syndicated columnist charles krauthammer. steve, where are we?ernight conventionm wisdom that the race is over. barack obama had a good convention. he is ahead in polls so we don't need to do the next few months. one prognosticator says 80% that obama will win on the strength of the polls. that is overstated i think. the separate question is whether the romney campaign looks to need to look to make adjustn'ts. the answer is question. if you look back at the way that the romney campaign between the end of, the effective end of the republican primary in april and the beginning of the general election or when they picked paul ryan it was a safe campaign. cautious campaign to look at the economic number, statistic. unemployment number. things like that. focus on those things. they didn't make progress. they picked paul ryan and the campaign changed. the campaign had a different feel. bigger, bolder, more conservative. they came out for a week and me a sustained and aggressive argument on medicare. they won the week. everybody was shocked at the end o

joining me now is "newsweek" columnist and cnbc contributor zachary carabell, amy stoddard and chip salgtzman. on the numbers you heard the president say before he took office 800,000 jobs a month were lost. governor romney said this is a national tragedy. what do people need toon about this? >> yes, it's better than it was in december of 2008, january, february, march of 2009 where you were losing hundreds of thousands of jobs. so 96,000 is a plus, as a whole is lot better than 700,000 negative. i'm not sure the question anyone is going into a voting booth because job creation is poor and not terrible, therefore i feel good about the economy. when we look at those numbers, there's a huge portion of the unemployment rate going down not because so many jobs were added but so many said this is a terrible job market, and i'm not even going to look. >> what does that mean when they categorize someone no longer looking? what does that mean? >> it's more than eight weeks. you have to be looking for a job to be counted unemployed. p if you say, this is a terrible market, i give up. you're not in the
