when i was a graduate school here at columbia in the 1980s, my mentor was eric stoner was back there. [applause] and in one of his graduate seminars i was in, we read the manuscript of his book does published in 1988, 87, which is a monumental book. after that point they would've never imagined imagined i could ever write a book like that. but as we talked about it over the semester any kind of lead us through how he did it over a couple of weeks, i started to think i could do something like that. i started to imagine, which of course is the biggest hurdle to overcome in a work like this. but that inspired me. i decided that sunday i wanted to write a book like eric's restructuring the period i eventually came up with the idea of doing something on your immigrant. usually when i would tell people my idea, they would mostly look at me like i was crazy. nobody could turn them into a narrative. it's not possible. in 1995, and that bruce nichols who is here who edited the book. he said that is a great idea. he said when are you going to start on it? i said i'm not ready to write that book
