how do you teach stonewall? how should teachers educate this generation in terms of exactly what happened and it's significance 50 years? later >> i think many of us have been trying to improve lgbt history education in colleges, universities and high schools. for some years, it's really important i think for it to be integrated into our general narratives of american history, is one thing for there to be courses on lgbt history in college and universities, it's another thing entirely when lgbt history and the history of the stonewall riots gets incorporated into the general american history courses. so a number of us are working very hard on that right now. i think many of us try to teach the stonewall followed 20 years of political organizing by lgbt people, so there was a pre-stonewall movement, many of us try to teach the much broader history of sexual and gender difference and variety in american history. so stretching back centuries. and then of course it's important to follow the story after the stonewall

there are definitely international contexts especially after stonewall. of course it just didn't just stop after stonewall happened and after the organization and managing society of washington became essentially a one-man organization . he continued working as part of the aclu which was very much in conversation with especially british reformers, especially after their own successes with overturning sodomy laws before stonewall. so there is that conversation and there is some really good studies. one i would recommend is by david minto who i believe is at durham university in the uk who talks about the transnational mobile movement and how some of these conversations were taking place in the carpenter hall archives in london are a great resource also to see how us activists were, including frank who were in conversation with the law reformers in the uk. and then of course even before frank's time, german activists had had a number of publications. we're talking and from the first home a file or gay publications that were ever disseminated in the us were
