the stoxx europe 600 gaining almost 0.9% at the moment. flat to higher at the moment. xetra dax higher approximately 1% right now and the ftse 100 higher by 0.6%. on the session, it's worth noting and super interesting to see here, ftse 100 now virtually having to erase all of the gains that we previously had made since the beginning of the year. so, year to date, we're now higher by just shy of 3% having come off significantly here within the past two weeks or so, and the same for the xetra dax as well, if we look at that chart. let's head out to asia, though, and check in on what's been taking place in the overnight session. sixuan joins us. sixuan? >> louisa, indeed, a wild ride in asia with china markets stirring up the high volatility. after yesterday's worst daily loss in four years, the shanghai composite and shenzhen tanked by 5% and 7% respectively midday before bouncing off their lows and ending weaker by just 0.2%. and shares in hong kong also reversed early weakness to finish higher by 0.2%. china's pboc basically skipped the liquidity operations once again

but we actually are at the best levels of the day for the dow jones stoxx 600. we had percent losses earlier on for many european bourses and following that 3% fall in the nikkei. the nikkei some 2,000 points off the high we had aspending requi. just to recap, 0.75 loert for the xetra dax and the ftse mib. we had better news today in terms of the p mi. a breakdown of the sectors, only two retail and basic resources that are up. the weakest, telecoms, insurance, utilities, autos, we'll take a look at this seconder as u.s. auto numbers coming out a little later. but there was better data today. first of all in the eurozone, still in contractionary territory for manufacturing pmis. but came in better than expected. 48.3. it was expected around 47.8. this was the flash number. ticked higher in spain, italy and germany and france than we expected. italy, though, still pointing out, it was 22 months of contraction. italian yields are high today. back up to 4.22%. a couple of weeks ago, we were down yielding 3.9%. spanish yields higher, 4.5%. gilt yields are higher tod

stoxx europe 600 up around 1.25%, so stabilizing there. a couple things i want to mention. mediabanc saying italy could need an eu bailout soon, next in line. there's a report they put out saying they would require a bailout in the next few months, citing the deepening economic crisis and the credit crunch as well being among the reasons they mentioned that, but our main markets higher to the tune of 0.5% to 1.5%. just moving on and also just looking at the bond markets, we have an italian bond auction a little earlier on as well. the two-year, zero-coupon yield at its highest level since september of 2012. bid-to-cover was just shy of 1.5% and we're also looking at them selling the very top end of the targeted range of 2.5 to 3.5 billion euros worth of paper. a lot of people saying we need to look closely at what's taking place with the yields. they continue to spike higher. we spoke earlier to mark farber. he didn't think the worst was over. jim o'neill from goldman sachs, though, indicating to us that he thinks tchinese credit crunch talks are not genuine, and when you l
