you >> heard tracie strahan mention that briefly in her piece. jonathan dienst is in the newsroom working up new details for us. what are your sources telling you? >> the suspect dentified as tyrone howard, 30 years old, a man with a long criminal past. law enforcement source s s tell us this is a photo from one of his many past arrests. he's been in and out of jail more than a dozen times. police say he allegedly robbed a biker at gunpoint after a gang dispute and 911 calls alerted police to the holdup.iaofficers say the suspect opened fire shooting and killing officer holder. a fake i.d. lead ing ing to some delay in police officially identifying the suspect. 30-year-old howard has 18 prior arrests here in new york. most are for drug dealing. he has spent time in prison at least 12 times and we're told his career as a criminal may have started with drug dealing when he was just 12 and may have also been involved in a gun-related robbery at age 14. we are still w king on those juvenile details. currently he has three arrest warrants out on him,

tracie strahan in east harlem. tracie, thank you. >> officer holder calm er er came from a family of lawmen, following his father and grandfather's footsteps when he joined the force. we want to go to kat creag for the latest. >> reporter: and michael, there are flowers inside the police station here. what you see on the outside, the black and purple bunting that shows a tragedy happened in this city. there is a great deal of mourning here.d he was well loved, according to his father, by his father and nypd family. that was evident when we saw this. the fellow officers, dozens of them who stood in lines, as officer holder was transported to the medical examiner's office. they saluted. he comes from a family of cops. his father talked with some of the offi rs last night who and he, the father, was the one trying to comfort them. officer holder was only 33 years old, a five-year veteran of the nypd, joining the force in july of 2010. he's a third-generation policeman. also, the fourth nypd officer killed in less than

tracie strahan on that story. thank you very much. >>> happening now, we have new video that could help police solve a deadly shooting that took place in brooklyn. asking you to take a look. police have released surveillance photos and video of two men wanted for questioning in a triple shooting in east williamsburg. investigators say 53-year-old michael matuziac was shot and killed while trying to stop three car thieves. two others were wounded. among them a 13-year-old girl shot while walking to school. >>> also following breaking news from abroad this morning. a british human rights group is reporting intense fighting in central syria this morning. they say a government-backed offensive began overnight. syrian troops are fighting insurgents. the troops are backed now by russian air strikes. russia began its air strikes in syria a week ago, allegedly targeting isis. some of these strikes appear to have hit rebels who oppose the syrian president. >>> happening now in south carolina, a close eye is being kept on m

we begin, though w tracie strahan in east harlem. hours later, it's still an active crime scene. >> reporter: there is still an incredible police presence here on 120th street where officer randolph holder was shot in the head. commissioner bratton said since the initial incident that led to this happened several blocks away, officers spent the overnight hours combing this entire stretch near the fdr trying to piece together what happened. let's show you a map of everything that happened over the past few hours. the initial call of shots fired came in at 102nd and 1st avenue. officer holder and other officers responded around 8:30 last night. president veteran housing bureau cop was shot several blocks away on the northbound fdr footpath. the suspect wasn't nabbed until he got to 124th street. reports of shots fired. they saw several men fleeing after those shots were heard at night. officer holder and another plain clothes officer encountered a man who said his bicycle had been stolen at gunpoint. as they mader that way towards the

tracie strahan is in ft. greene where a very large crime scene is set up, we understand. >> reporter: that's right. we're looking at investigators down the street looking at evidence markers from what became a shootout between police officers and three men. one of them in police custody as he's recovering at a hospital from a gunshot wound at this hour. i'm going to step out of the way and show you. it's very difficult to see because there's still traffic on this street. but we're told that police say they noticed three men in a dispute right here at park and north portland avenue. when the officers drove by, they turned their car around to speak with the men. at least two of them started firing at police officers. that unmarked vehicle was struck numerous times. miraculously, none of the officers inside were hurt. a canvas of this rea turned up a 21-year-old man at the hospital with a gunshot wound to his left thigh. he's said to be in stable condition. again, he is in police custody. right now police office

tracie strahan is in east harlem where that officer was stationed. this is remarkable that they were able to recover this weapon from the east river. >> reporter: and they're going them this week as the tributes continue to grow here at psa-5. authorities will start the week probing this new possible break in the case. something that came about yesterday after nearly 100 officers searched the fdr side by side looking for any possible evidence of this case. it's something that shut down the fdr for a short time. they were looking for any bullets fired at officer holder. around 3:00 a.m. on sunday, divers recovered a handgun that they say is consistent with the weapon used to kill the officer during a foot chase in east harlem last week. it was under about 20 feet of water, and authorities say the nypd's scuba team searched for it on their stomachs and really recovered it by hand. as they prepare to lay him to rest this week, officer holder's loved ones paid tribute to his memory on sunday. >> i told this to his father. i said, we will always be here f

vernon. >> tracie strahan is on ground there. tracie? >> reporter: as they continue to put water on this fire, the red cross has shown up, helping this three-alarm fire started at 1:00 this morning on gramatan avenue and is still not under control. it affected a commercial strip that houses a deli, a laundry mat and a pizza shot. there's also a three-story apartment on top of it. that collapsed in under one hour. again, all four residents got themselves to safety. right now it's believed that it started in the basement of that deli. of course, it's unclear at this point what may have started all of this. back to you. >> all right, tracie. thank you. now to katherine creag outside hempstead middle school, where grief counselors will be on hand for grieving students. >> reporter: they certainly will, darlene and michael. the 12-year-old girl, dejah joyner, she loved her friends, enjoyed her school. this is where counselors will be to talk with those grief-stricken class mates and friends. dejah was shot friday afternoon as she walked into

tracie strahan is in mt. hope where police around the that woman overnight. >> reporter: well, the infant's mother is charged with second-degree murder. that's what we've learned. we also heard from witnesses who say her other young children who were inside at the time begged her not to do it. we've learned that 27-year-old tanisha farren is facing those murder charges. witnesses say they overheard her yelling "god, help us all" before she dangled her her other children were saying, mom mommy, don't throw her. the 6-month-old was rushed to st. barnabus hospital where she was pronounced dead. those who knew farren say this was all out of character. >> she was laying on the floor naked. after that, she started just yelling. >> she looks like a perfect mother. those kids were always well fed. you could see it. they were healthy, well-dressed, very respectful. >> reporter: her other children are all in police custody -- or the custody of child and family services this morning. witnesses say they were also naked,

tracie strahan is there with new video just released by police. disturbing story, tracie. >> reporter: it really is, darlene. let's tell you what we know about the suspect from police this morning. this is all new information. we do know he's in his 30s. he's someone that has an accent. he's approach and forcibly touched young boys inside this park, an area that's usually filled with children. here's the video that was released by police early this morning. you can see the suspect walking calmly down the street. police told me over the phone this was before one of his incidents. in one case, authorities tell us that he approached a young boy, 13 years old, offering him cash if he could help him carry his bags. when the boy agreed, the two entered seton falls park. the suspect then took advantage of that young boy, grabbing his buttocks. let's show you another look at the suspect. police say he struck two more times in this park. once again offering a 15-year-old boy money to carry his bags. then leading him to an isolated area of the park, exposin
