strangelove. we could have spent the whole time here today talking about dr. strangelove. what an amazingly brilliant film. the iconic ending where he is riding the bomb down. people don't have to have seen it to have it in their minds. the cold war has a tremendous effect on the film industry, but mostly, it does not happen -- obviously the villains are often the soviet union in political thrillers. if you are old enough like me, you can remember that the soviet union began to come apart, when the berlin wall came down, and you see the movie industry struggling how to make a political thriller. now who is going to be the enemy? there is a sort of searching about for an enemy that will fill the space of the soviet union. that is the kind of obvious way in which the cold war shapes the american film industry, but i think even more powerfully it shapes -- it pushes these kinds of critiques or discussions that could be overtly political into other mediums so that they don't get censored. that is the way that we don't think about how it affects the film industry. television ch
