stuart varney joins us from the fox business network. stuart, explain these numbers for us. >> the raw dollar numbers lay out the level of wealth destruction. if you go back to 2007, add up what the median family was worth in dollar terms. the number is 126,000 bucks. fast forward just three years to 2010, and that number was all the way down to $77,000. that is the median family's net worth. that is the destruction of wealth on a scale we've never seen before. it takes us all the way back to the levels of 1992 median family wealth. and it means that an entire generation of wealth creation was wiped out in those three years, 07 to 2010. and, martha, the principle reason for that wealth destruction was the housing market bust. the very sharp decline in housing prices because that's where middle america stores its wealth. it was that group that took a very, very big hit because of the housing bust. martha: it is just devastating, stuart, when you look at it in these stark terms and these numbers and of course everybody attaches so much of

stuart varney joins me no, from the fox business network. stuart, good morning. there was a feeling sort of a reprieve, a moment of breathing sigh of relief in all this. how long does that last if at all? >> it lasted about 12 hours. yeah, there was a little optimism after so-called pro-bailout party won the greek election by just two points by the way. now it is back to reality. bottom line, martha, your foreowe one k and america's economy is very much at risk what is happening over there. greece simply can't repay its debts. under no circumstances can it repay the amount of money it needs to repay. moreover, after this morning, spain looks like it needs a bailout. spain is the fourth largest economy in europe. is there enough money available to bail out spain? the germans, they're the ones with the money. they're not really keen about paying the bills for all of europe. which leaves president obama and the g20 summit that starts today in mexico, basically pleading for the mother of all bailouts, whether or not the germans are going to pay is another story entir

stuart varney does not work for any of them. he is the anchor of "varney & company" on fox business network. add it up. what does it mean? >> that news on the banks came at the end of the day. it was probably the worst economic news of the day. five big banks downgraded. what does that mean for the economy? it means it will be very tough for small businesses especially to go out and get loans. which means these downgrades of the big banks is going to hurt the future of the economy which is already weakening. it is bad news, bill. bill: home sales were down this week. manufacturing was down. almost significantly too on that measure. what does that mean? >> those are two very significant points there. when home sales actually decline, when you've got record low mortgage rates, that tells you something about the housing market and the overall economy. and yesterday's news that manufacturing contracted more than at any point in the past year that too points to a very weak economy going forward. weak in terms of job creation and prob

martha: we all know what kind of debt we're in, stuart. but one of the arts that's laid out in summer's piece is that money is simply so cheap right now, that it behooves you to take advantage of these low, low rates. is there an economic argument to support that? >> yes there is. there is an argument which says look, if the government, the american government, goes out and borrows money for ten years, you only pay 1.5% interest. it has never, ever been as low as that. so it's very, very cheap. if you invest that borrowed money in projects which create income down the road, it's a good economic gamble. it's a good economic equation. there is a case to be made. the other side of the ledger is don't you frighten off people when you raise the debt above 15 1/2, 16, 17, $18 trillion? don't you frighten people more with the debt than you get out of it by investing it in projects? it's a very interesting equation, martha. martha: it's very interesting. also it goes back to the argument of well, what are you going to do in terms of spending cuts
