>> i think no is the short answer, stuart. stuart: no?k you will see five or 6% growth next year. we simply don't have the conditions to get there yet on the policy side. to get 5, 6% growth you need a big tax deal, need the regulatory state to pull off. you would need some sort of certainty when it comes to things like obamacare. what is more likely you see the kind of steady growth we've seen over the last couple of years. really look -- stuart: about 2 1/2%, maybe three? >> three, 4% would be terrific. but look, there are some headwinds here in the economy. you have regulatory assault on business. you have obamacare. uncertainty of the midterms. no big boost. is immigration going to happen? will we get a big trade deal? will we get tax reform with max baucus going to china? i don't think so. stuart: do you think that the democrats could actually run, ignore obamacare, they are going to have to ignore obama care but run instead on new normal, steady as she goes growth. making progress on unemployment? 2 1/2, 3% growth, much better than

fox business network stuart varney joins us to break it all down. stuart, good morning to you. what do you make of this number. >> for five years, we have new normal, low growth, high unemployment. this report suggest that is growth is picking up and new jobs coming on stream. dig below the surface and give you two very big numbers. number one, 218,000, that is how many people found work last month. that is the best performance in 30 years. next number, 63%. that is the participation rate. it's up from the month before. still fairly low. very low in fact but a tick upwards. so what you got here is a sign of some strength in the economy, some renewed hope that maybe we're breaking beyond the new normal. i can tell you now, martha. the reaction the stock market is exuberant. you will see the dow go up about 100 points plus minutes from now. martha: it's interesting, stuart. you know the next conversation will be, well, you know, are things heating up to the point where we need to kind of pull back the reins on the money we've been pushing into this market and that might send the

joining us right now, stuart varney.nt out when he was saying detroit, he meant the car industry. and now the city has gone bankrupt. they've accepted their fate. what does that mean for the pensions? >> if you work for a city, you're retired, a retired city worker and it's a troubled, financially troubled city, you should be worried because detroit's bankruptcy sets a new pattern. it sets a new model because the detroit bankruptcy judge has said, yes, you can cut pensions. it doesn't matter what it says in the michigan state constitution. it doesn't matter what the unionize say. yes, says the judge, you can cut pensions. pensions for retired workers are the key problem for troubled cities across the country. now they have this new model. detroit says you can cut those pensions, so you better get pretty worried if you're in these troubled cities across the country. >> detroit is in troubled times. a third of the city is unoccupied but they are going to bounce back. total debt is between $8 billion and $10 billion. unfund

stuart varney. martha: fox news alert. it is a race against time and frigid cold temperatures as search teams are scrambling to find a family lost in the remote nevada mountains. the couple and their four children went to the mountains to play in the snow and have not been seen since. william la jeunesse is live on the ongoing rescue search for them. william, what is the latest? >> reporter: right now, martha, temperatures are eight degrees below zero in the mountains for the second straight night. second straight night search teams came up empty for the two adults and four children. the area is north of reno. it is called seven troughs. it represents seven steep canyons. a popular camping and hiking area, about 7,000 feet elevation. the family is 235-year-old james and. they went out sunday to play in the show. temperatures fell to 16 degrees below zero that night. multiple search-and-rescue teams, helicopters, fixed-wing are out there. they have infrared. they see body cold or temperatures at night. they're following dir

stuart, wrong statement i gave at the top? maybe some people don't think the fed will taper at some point. i believe it will. so how do we set up for it now? >> well, you know, we believe it will. the fed spoke last year or this year like it would and put it off. our expectation is probably they will be wanting to look for more data before they do and some more data that comes from the government closing period. they didn't see all the data from the first part of the fourth quarter, so we think it will probably be in the first quarter of next year and then the next question is, how long will it take for them, you know, to finish it up. you know, they're not -- may not be real clear on that. >> what are the arguments to taper this month, zane? >> well, i think there are some good arguments. keep in mind that back in may, both members of the fed and members of the support group at the new york reserve mentioned that boy, if we had three consecutive months of 200,000 job growth unlike the 185 per month we had up to that point, th
