stuart ramsay is inside aleppo this evening and joins us by phone. what can you tell bus the situation there? >> reporter: there's a mig fighter jet, a russian-made fighter jek carrying out attacks on a number of free syrian army positions. this has been going on for pretty much most of the day. there is a return of fire at the jets, but it's hopeless, to be honest. they say they've taken over the citadel, the ancient monument in the center of aleppo, but we know the syrian army are gathering in greater numbers. more tanks have been brought brought up, and of course they completely control the sky. >> axelrod: how do the free syrian army rebels deal with the fact that they're so overpowered? >> reporter: well, two things. firstly, they're working inside a city, ancient city, quite high buildings, probably five or six stories. they can hide beneath those. they can move in those always. they have beaten many tanks already. these, again, are russian-made tanks. due to the makeup of them, they explode very easily. they have that advantage. the other, of
