stuart varney of the fox business network is here to sort it out for us. stuart, tell us about the survey first. wal-mart sees prices going up. >> it was not a wal-mart survey. it was done by a private company that walked into wal-mart stores unbeknownst to wal-mart and checked the price of 86 everyday items. grocery items. they came up with an inflation figure of 4%. ok? well, the fed -- annualized, the federal reserve says it's only about 2% or less so you've got this disconnect between what the officials are saying that's the rate of inflation, 2% or less and what the survey found secretly within wal-mart, the greatest retailer of them all which says 4% so you've got this disconnect but eric, it is explainable. the official figures include housing costs. >> housing costs. no housing in wal-mart? >> no housing at wal-mart, exactly and electronic costs, for example, the survey did not check electronic costs. they are going down. no inflation there. and how about clothing? there's no inflation in clothing. surely. and i don't know whether the survey covere

stuart varney joins us from the fox business network.ou say you think we may see a compromise on this bush tax cuts issue by the end of today? >> i don't know about the end of today but this is so important, and the penalty for failure to reach a compromise is so grave that the pressure is really on to get a compromise. and moss people think there will be a compromise. at the moment, though, martha, everybody is staking out a negotiating position. nancy pelosi says do not extend them for the rich, we can't afford it, we have senator schumer saying extend them for the rich but not for millionaires, david axelrod and the president say middle class cuts, make them permanent, extend them for a limited time for the rich and republicans say make them all permanent. these are all negotiating positions, maybe moving towards the center which would be permanent middle class tax cuts and an extension of 2-3 years for the rich. if they don't get that agreement, everybody who pays tax sees their tax rate go up on january 1st. penaltyies of failure fo

boost the value of its currency, the anchor of varney & company and the fox business network, stuart varney joins us now. why is it a failure for the president. >> let me amplify, you call it a failure, it may be a bit strong but there was absolutely no gain for america in these financial meetings. on the issue of a trade, no deal whatsoever. on currencies, china, refuses to budge. on the issue of america printing $600 billion new dollars, well, we're under harsh criticism from the rest of the world and the result is, you could probably call this a failure. the president has gotten nothing from other countries, out of this trip. now he returns to what you described a moment ago to near chaos and confusion on the issues of debt and spending in the u.s. and the result is these are difficult "financial times" for america, at home and abroad. martha: stuart, when you have countries like germany and brazil, really getting their backs up an accusing the united states of flooding the market with u.s. currency, through the infusion, of $600 billion into the jetstream, mainstream, you know, i mean,
