whatever goes on in sturgis doesn't stay in sturgis.t travels home with you, whether it's coronavirus or std or criminal record or whatever. it's a little scary to have these many people come. i understand the idea of the freedom of it all. i have been to the rally myself and seen people having a lot of fun. but at the same time every year there is some trouble and i worry about my own community this year. honestly, i have a grandson named jack, and if he wanted to ride his bike to south dakota and go to the rally, i would say don't do it, jack, stay home and read a book, it's not safe. >> some bikers, they are openly defying wearing a mask. is there anything you can think of that could be done to convince them that masks are essential to keep not only themselves safe but everyone around them. the things that happen in sturgis won't stay in sturgis. how can we get people understanding or at least persuading them to do the masks? >> it's too late. the people in sturgis were wondering what to do, but these hundreds of thousands of people

they are coming to sturgis.decided that it was for the community to be prepared for the additional people that we're going to end up having. >> i read in previous statements you have made that the city of sturgis net around a 1 to $1.5 million in tax revenue. assuming that's correct and that the economy played a big role in hosting these folks, do you think that's worth the possible health risk? >> well, that really didn't play into the picture at all. when we look at it every year, just for transparency for our public, we do put together the profit/loss we get from holding the event. but in the end, our council was more than willing to give up the revenue from this year if it was something that would be manageable. i think what's important for people to understand is in a very small community and rural western south dakota, you cannot have tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people come without preparations including garbage and sanitation and additional law enforcement and emergency and medical perso

as you say, the thing that might happen in sturgis aren't going to stay just in sturgis. how can we convince people? anything to keep them understanding or at least persuaded to do the masks? >> you know, it's too late. and honestly, the people in sturgis were wondering what to do. but these hundreds of thousands of people are going to come, whether they allowed it or not. and there's -- there's just no way to have prevented this debacle from happening. you know, the -- i think, someday, maybe six months from now, we'll see tombstones that say he went to sturgis. and that'll be on their -- on their grave site. i would encourage people not to go to sturgis now. come back, when things are less busy. come back and don't mingle in these massive crowds. it -- it's -- you know -- >> well, you know, as you think about it, i mean, sturgis isn't going anywhere. but the coronavirus could go away, if we do the right things. thank you for your time and your thoughts this evening. >> you're welcome. >> be safe. >>> controversial liberty university president jerry falwell jr., is takin

rapid city only 30 miles from sturgis.a lot of the attendees are going to come through your town on the way home. are you concerned about any spillover effects in your community? >> thank you for having me. absolutely. the first part, they stop in rapid city, flying in or they stay here, and the good thing about the sturgis rally is it does go up and down the northern and southern hills with the motorcycles. but the big party and the big cluster is in sturgis which is about a 25-minute drive north of rapid city. >> you're concerned about the effects that this event potentially as a superspreader could have on native american communities in your area. tell me more about that. >> well, it affects our entire black hills community as well and let me just start by saying, i'm not against the rally. i'm not against motorcycles or tourism. but not during a global pandemic. that's where i take issue. >> yeah, of course. and on that question of native americans, is that right that you were especially concerned about that community?

joining us now is the mayor of sturgis, mr., a quarter of a million people from all over the country coming your way during a pandemic. is this really a good idea? >> well, it's been a difficult decision and a process that started in the month of march. it's been apparent that what the city of sturgis can do, we can not stop people from coming. we have had a tremendous amount of visitors already. all that being said, being prepared is what we put out as a priority for everybody, both for the community and for our visitors. so we prepare for rallies every year but this one takes a little bit more and we want to stress personal responsibility to our visitors and our residents as this gathering moves forward. >> in other words, they were coming anyway, so you guys just had to accept that and try to deal with it. so i guess my question to you, there are some states and some cities that have quarantine restrictions in place. what measures are you taking for the bikers coming from hot spots in texas, in california, in arizona, in flo
