adrian broadus is in sturgis.g, are people worried about spread of the delta variant? >> reporter: phil, the majority of riders we talked to in sturgis say they're not concerned. for example, the rider behind us is from colorado. the cluster of bikes on the other side are from utah. people come from all corners of the country, for many of them, this is an escape from cities and towns where they don't have to deal with covid restrictions. last year, the rally was blamed on a spike in covid cases. there were about 649 cases, including one death linked to the rally. this year, more people are expected to show up. an estimated 700,000. sturgis is a small town of about 7,000. i talked to one rider from minneapolis and asked him are you worried at all about covid or rise of the delta variant. here's what he said. >> i got my shot, i am vaccinated. >> did you get the vaccine? >> hell no, ain't getting it until they tell you it isn't making you sterile and kill your [bleep]. >> i don't trust it, it is not approved yet. >>

in the united states, it's estimated up to 750,000 people will flock to the sturgis motorcycle rallye next ten days. the rally is mecca for bikers who are determined to come despite the pandemic and a rise in covid cases due to the delta variant. so what are organisers doing this year to keep cases down? earlier i spoke to daniel ainslie, he is the city manager for sturgis, and i asked for his reaction to some criticism that last year's rally was a super spreader event allegedly leading to some 250,000 cases. you know, that estimate really came from an incredibly biased study that used a false narrative before they even began doing any of their actual research. when you look at the oxford study that actually counted real cases that were verified, there was about a63 cases that came from the event last year, that had almost 500,000 people. if you compare that to another metropolitan area in america, of 400—500,000 people, we were actually the second lowest amount of transmission. so actually all things considered it was a very, very low transmission rate, especially when you look at t

the city of sturgis is doing a number of things different. they have the masks and hand sanitizers. one is is availability of the johnson & johnson one shot vaccine. you could get it here today fp they so desire. they lifted the open container policy in this town. folks can spend all day here downtown outside drinking outside and that is hoping to alleviate some of the crowds we saw in past years in the bars. i want to be clear, this is not 700,000 unvaccinated people. many of the folks are vaccinated. we spoke to two of them who said they know the risks and they are making their own personal choice. >> i've been vaccinated. i got a lot of things going on in my life. >> i was here last year. there was no lockdown here. there was no mask. you could if you wanted to. i went to seven different states last year, talked to thousands of people. i wasn't worried about it. i'm a realist. if it's my turn, it's my turn. not going to worry about it. >> reporter: that is not the only large scale event we have seen. just last weekend in chicago, we saw more than 300,000 people at lallopalooza. o

sturgis is such an interestiing situation. on one hand, it's mostly outdoors in terms of the bike rally itself. that part doesn't bother me. i think most outdoor co configurations are still pretty safe. there are obviously extreme examples. it's the things around it. it's the hotel lobby. it's the people not wearing masks in those moments. it's the indoor dining. a year ago, we had no vaccines and no tests. unsafe in those indoor situations. now a year later, we can actually not cancel everything if we use the tools. but i fear we're not using those tools correctly. >> yeah. i think that's the question right now, right? no one can identify, with good reason, delta is new, everybody is still getting new data and analysis, it is really difficult to identify what the risk factors are, what should be changed, how dramatic the changes should be. one of the things that's catching people at this moment, as we're seeing kind of the early stages of the data, is it is not just older people coming down with the delta variant. listen to w
