why has the fda not established an office in sub-saharan africa? it is obviously a critical area in addressing global health, addressing specific concerns of the fta. we are working regionally in africa now, through various programs, including the pepvar program, drugs that are available through that program for the treatment of hiv aids as well as tuberculosis. we are also working in sub- saharan africa with colleagues from the gates foundation on important project to look at ways to strengthen regulatory capacity in the region. this is a high priority, for me as commissioner. i think it is essential that the usda, sister regulatory authorities in other parts of the world that are sophisticated and mature, work together to make sure we do everything we can to build regulatory capacity in the developing world. this matters to us in terms of raising the standards and oversight of products, import commodities that will be imported into the u.s. is important to those nations in the developing world. by strengthening legator capacity in those countries
