i wanted to make sure we had a safe, solvent, and successful city. this year, i would like to guide you in terms of making sure our city is involving you, that we are innovative in our approaches, and that we end our decisionmaking with a full appreciation of how we invest in our city. involving you, being innovative and creative, and investment in our city. whether your investment is just yourself, your family, your investment in the small business, or somebody else's business. if we are in investment friendly city, then you are going to want to stay here and grow. that's how i see it. that city that we love of san francisco can only be that way if we all work together, all listen carefully, that we reflect the traditions of a great city that listens to every neighborhood and bounces and makes those hard decisions the best way we can -- balances and makes those hard decisions the best way we can. guess what? we are not going to have state. jerry brown is not coming in offering more money. he is doing the opposite thing. he has to. washington, d.c., g

city to succeed. if it is successful, you will feel that much more committed to being part of the city. we invite you to be part of that. we do that through s.f. city. my chief innovation officer is here. we are one of the only cities in the country -- i hired a chief innovation officer right from the mayor's officer -- from the mayor's office. he is right on the pulse about technology and how to contribute to the quality of life and our city. one of the ideas i have, i get to start a task force with all of the mayors across the country. all of the other mayors for dissipate, -- participate, hundreds. we get to advise the president and congress as to what our cities need. part of that, i ask them, how about i start a technology and innovation task force for all of the mayor's tax introduced companies like dropbox to other mayors across the country so they can take advantage of technology. they may not have the kind of creative environment that we have in san francisco. i know new york, boston, gainesville, florida is trying to get it. chicago, emanuel is trying to create a technology ce

it is wonderful to see you get out of the economic doldrums and into the loves and success in the cityave suffered many years of setbacks. we have suffered where programs we care about, services have been attractants, and this year and for the next two years i worked hard with supervisors to make sure we had conversation and restored all the funding to the cuts to hiv and aids, and we will continue making that commitment, and that should not be an issue here in san francisco. it should never be an issue. we should always talk about how we serve the residents of this city equitably, and that is why we have to make sure we have a strong economic base to make sure that happens, and at the same time we can have a police chief that create the video that helps our use and make sure they know we care about them. a whole police department needs to be praised for their efforts to educate our youth, and in addition to making sure discrimination is not faithere d that we have programs to do that, we are offering our kids jobs so they can make sure they get employment, and they can have some of th

successful. he reformed city pensions. focus is on economic development, job creation, and building san francisco's future. a great job, especially for helping out families. we want to keep families here. i also wanted to mention a little bit of his past. he was born in 1952 in the beacon hill neighborhood of seattle, washington. his parents immigrated to the u.s. from china and the 1930's. his father fought in world war ii and worked as a cook. he passed away when the mayor was 15. his mother was a seamstress and a waitress. mayor lee has five siblings, he graduated from college in maine, he also went to uc- berkeley law school and finished in 1978. he and his wife have two daughters. i also want to mention, prior to becoming mayor, one of the key points in his contributions to the community is after he completed law school, he worked as a managing attorney for the san francisco asian law caucus, where he was an advocate for affordable housing and the rights of immigrants and renters. mayor lee -- [applause] >> thank you.

leading the effort to make sure that the technology companies in of a -- innovate and find success as part of our city. i would like that success of innovation that many technology companies are bringing to their businesses to also happen with our school district. i know that if we can innovate our way to better taxi dispatch is like we are doing with technology companies were better ways to service delivery, we can also innovate ways in which education can be a greater part of every kids' lives and all parents. and making sure that we can use technology and the business community to do that. we will be introducing these ideas, working with our principles, working with the school boards and the superintendent to make sure that we can also link the businesses that are doing great things and discovering fantastic ideas of businesses. we can also link them to the school districts and make them an innovative part. thank you for being here, thank you for sharing, and thank you for being part of our great movement of community schools in our city and our country. thank you very much. [applause] supervisor chu: thank you very much. are there other members of the public? please come forward. >> hello, supervisors. my name is happy. i'm the vice chair of the san francisco youth commission. i just graduated from high school, going to harvard in the fall. i'm here to support the youth commission for the priorities we presented to you guys in may. i think the most important piece of our budget part that is relevant to your budget this year is opening up the yard for juvenile youth. you know, i want to speak on behalf of the youth commission as well as on behalf of my colleagues, renee and angel, who both have experience in the system, so i was experiencing justice so i hope more juvenile youth can have access to the yard and more recognizeuation area.

city. part of the cal academies' astronomical success is the weekly nightlife party. >> i am joined by helen, who is here to school me on all the nocturnal activities that are getting ready to take place here. tell us a little about what we can expect to see at nightlife. >> we open up the doors every thursday night at the california academy of sciences. there are certain things you can see every week you can go to the museum, visit the planetarium, and we bring in bars and a deejay or band. it is a different feel from during the day, something different every week. tonight , we have beer and music. -- tonight we have great beer and music. it is beer week. we have a dozen local brewers in african hall. we have a deejays to set up throughout the museum and a live performance at 9:00 p.m. tonight. >> what has been your favorite part as a participant or as an observer? >> my favorite part is to walk around the aquarium in to see people with a drink in their hands, getting to know maybe somebody new, may be looking for a day, or chatting with friends. there jellyfish. i mean, they are beautiful.

we had some great successes on the city wide broadband program, ruling out free wi-fi sites and the btop program, connecting homework and community centers to the internet to get connected. we continue our voice-over ip project. dark fiber leasing, we continue to expand that. we finished a couple of projects and we have one under way to release them some fiber and we're working on america's cup project and things like that for dark fiber as well. we feel that we can assist the city -- we have analyzed the phone bills to look for unused lines and different rate plans to save the city on phone costs. we have a program where we are reviewing all technology purchases, we look for areas where department are buying things we think there is a cheaper way to do it and we work with them to realize some cost for the city and we continue to work on the program or we get people to buy software products together through software agreements. we renewed our buy -- via program and we save almost a million dollars a year. we implemented a few other city- wide software agreements for geographic informatio
