i happen to ref suffolk county on long island and new york. we have suffered with more opioid deaths and related deaths than any other county in my state. between 2009 and 2013, 334 people in suffolk county lost their lives to heroin or open yoids. by comparison, brooklyn, which has one million more residents, had only half the number of opioid deaths in the same time. treatment admissions for opioid addiction on long island rose 16, 681 87 in 2010, to in 2014. that's a 29% increase. these are percentages, mr. speaker, these are statistics all of us in this body know how this epidemic is affecting real lives. just over two weeks ago i met with the students from it high school west one world youth organization. i met with a young woman. she shared with me that her brother died of an overdose in january at 23. he was friendly, he was outgoing, he loved to spend time with his family. he was a good kid who got caught up in a epidemic that is impacting way too many long island families and way too many american families. so much so that they have ni

the growing heroin and opioid crisis has hit especially home in my district in suffolk county, new york. there was a 2005 report issued in new york state that showed out of all 62 counties in new york, that it was my home county that was hit the hardest by the rise of heroin and opioid abuse. we had the highest number of heroin related overdose deaths of any county in new york. as a member of the bipartisan task force to combat the heroin epidemic, i have spoken with effective -- affected families directly. addiction is a truly devastating disease that shatters lives, families, and communities. it's a disease that only continues to spread at rapid rates, and more can and must be done to counteract the damage it has done and prevent its rapid advancement. working closely with my local community, i have been pursuing a more localized solution to address this crisis. hosting multiple drug task force round tables in suffolk county, i have been able to bring together local officials, law enforcement, health professionals, community groups, parents, concerned residents, and those in recovery

county of suffolk. with the highest population of veterans by county in new york state and one of the highest populations in the country, there is a significant need for increased care options for our veterans in suffolk. there are so many options of quality care for veterans, but too often their choices are limited. quality care can also come at great expense. in an effort to expand access to care for our veterans, i recently introduced party legislation in congress, h.r. 2460, which would ensure that 70% or more service connected disabled veterans are able to receive adult day health care, a daily program for disabled veterans, who need extra assistance and special attention in their day-to-day lives. it comes at no cost to the veteran and their family because the program is defined as a reimbursable treatment option through the department of veterans affairs. this legislation has strong bipartisan support in congress. with over 45 co-sponsors, including the entire long island congressional delegation.
