my predecessor was chief suhr, as you well know. under his leadership, there was a dramatic drop in violent crime in the distributor i am proud to report that we're continuing that trend here in the bayview. we will get into more specifics about that later. but we're excited about the fact that we are making more than a dent in violent crimes in the baby. as you move further through the powerpoint, the homicides -- of the homicide job is demonstrative. as you can see, in the first part of the year 2000's, we were running 25 to 30 homicides a year in the bayview. when chief suhr was a bit, it dropped down to 13, 14. obviously one homicide is too many, but last year we had 11. so far this year we have three. it is unsafe to speculate about a homicide, of is the, the up and down, but there is a trend here in terms of violent crime that we're deeply appreciative about. we moved on to other crimes. you can look. the same principles apply. but in property crimes as well. enforcement operation, i have a special presentation for you this ev

nothing was done by ed lee other than appointing greg suhr as the chief of police who was demoted to deputy chief. so there is a lot of issues going on pertaining to law enforcement, and i personally believe that it is a waste of money what is going on here. the man was elected by the people, and the people who are making these decisions why we are here are several. greg suhr, whom he appointed, brought the evidence to garscon, so think about ethics and that when you go forward. thank you. one of the things we worked on, my former boss, chief suhr, was a captain there and gave you. he started the weekly meeting with the plain clothes people that you will hear from, housing, and the station investigation team. we get together and pass around information on crime stories. any trends going on in the district. that way people are aware of it. the captain said patrol is a big issue. they do a lot of work collectively as a group. violence has diminished on the third street corridor. crime is down. that is nice. we have to keep working at it. being a beat officer, i have been on control -- control for 15 years after the bitter fishing the radio is fun, but getting out and talking to the people is how you solve things. the officers immediately make it a point of shaking people's hands. the merchants association is very strong in the baby. and getting out to the kids. it is about getting out and knowing people. i am not just some guy you cannot talk to. this is how beat officers should be. it has been a lot of fun. it is a lot of hard work. the officers did a very good j

on saturday, april 7, several districts stations here in the city, including chief suhr's staff, were at the cookoff. it was a great event. i attended with my son. although our team lost, it was really the epitome of community policing. it is nice to see the uniformed officers interacting at what is essentially a major bar-b-q. congratulations to the staff for a great event. also, later that night, there was a dinner, and it ended at a lions club which honors the firefighters and others of the year. 12 officers or honored at that event. on tuesday april 10, the cheese held a community event to update the public on the homicides, just to make sure the community was getting accurate information. we put a lot of information as we could as quickly as we could after the homicides, and thankfully, we were able to make an arrest within 48 hours, but just in case there were fears in the community, we had tamil meetings, we would do after an officer-involved shooting. later that night, there was the commemorative meeting for officer espinosa at the bayview station. on thursday, april 12, the c

for example, last evening, we went to law school with cheese suhr, and there was information about the occupy movement, and there was an attorney. it was incredible. there was a packed house. the press was there from pbs. and the part that i want to bring to you all, the most amazing thing, there was no complaint with the first amendment project about the san francisco police department handling of the occupy movement. in fact, something to be proud about, we are kind of a model. we are not uc-davis or berkeley or oakland. one of the reasons is we have a civilian oversight, and there was conversation about participation with the occ, and the checks and balances we have in place and that the officers tend to do something different. so i have to tell you, the chief was great. he made his presentation, and the message was clear. we will do all we can to facilitate it. that is the policy of the city. but when you cross a line and start assaulting officers, there is going to be an arrest, so i think it was very well-received by the law students and the folks you were there. there was a comm

it does not work without the leadership at the top and thank you for that, chief suhr. i was struck at our joint meeting, we have all been through some difficult meetings where the department can beat up at and it was not that. it was a balance set of public comment which i was pleased to see and a tremendous account of positive public comment from kids. i thought that was great. we can always do better as a department. i think accepting the recommendations the use commission has made and the department will implement is an effort to do better. you always want to do better. the second thing i want to say is we have been doing better. the department has been getting better year after year and the best actual evidence of that as director hicks can attest to is the number of complaints made that the occ has declining and declining. that has not taken into account sustained complaints. this is individuals in our community who are dissatisfied with their interactions with the police, represented by the number of complaints made has been decreasing year after year for the pas
