"7 on your side" investigator chris pabst is live in arlington with a look at local bridges in need of repair. chris? >> alison this bridge behind me is the route 27 bridge that goes over route 110. this is one of two bridges that vdot is paying very close attention to right now. it is structurally deficient and is scheduled to be replaced in just a couple of months here starting in the spring. now, if you walk up on this bridge, you can see it deteriorate deteriorated, the deck and railing. what you can't see is a big problem. vdot tells "7 on your side" this bridge has internal cracking and the cost to replace it $27 million. 12 miles west of here there's another bridge vdot is paying very close attention to. it's very heavily trafficked. that's route 7, that bridge that goes over the dulles toll road. that has the same external structure or problems that this bridge has. the first one, although it does not have the internal cracking the cost to fix that one $35 million. that will

"7 on your side"'s chris pabst is live in southwest with the secretary's message today. chris? >> well alison secretary fox's message is quite simple. he says that america needs to find a way to fix its ailing highways and infrastructure. the problem is these guys finding a way to pay for it. over the past five days, the u.s. department of transportation secretary anthony fox has been touring five states including virginia looking at the nation's infrastructure. today, he concluded his tour with a stop at union station with mayor muriel bowser. now, fox was pushing how important it is to the federal government to find a way to raise billions in revenue to repair the nation's bridges, highways and roads. after years of stop gaps and temporary funding, the highway trust fund is set to expire on may 31st of this year. and fox says congress and the president must take action. >> if we're being honest with ourselves today, we would say that we know we're not doing for the future generatio

at least four other bridges along i-95 and suitland parkway were identified in those 63,000 across the nation. this is not a new story. it's an old story. it's really a story about money. they need about $1.6 billion in maryland about $7 billion in virginia. it gets down to money, gets down to congress because the states rely on them for most of this highway funding. >> think about the number of people that can be employed doing this long-term employment. this is what the president has been trying to say. pass an infrastructure bill. we can put people to work. we can increase and speed up commerce and safety. that's really what it's all about. >> stun guns in virginia schools, a bill making its way through the general assembly would allow school security officers to carry stun guns and pepper spray and other such weapons. the bill was presented by mark cole. he wants school security officers to respond in the event there's an armed intrude ir at a school. opponents including governor terry mcauliffe's administration says they could be used against intruders but also against students. >
