"my aircraft." remarkably there is footage of the plane's last moments airborne. >> sully took over control of the airplane and called for the dual engine failure checklist that we do. and i started to perform that. >> trying to get the engines restarted. >> yes. >> was there any luck at all? >> no. the engines have to be in a certain start envelope, we call it, to start. and that usually is predicated on you going a lot faster. the airbus dual engine failure checklist assumes the engines have failed at cruising altitude. 30,000 feet would have given the pilots ample time to figure things out. hitting a flock of canada geese at just 3,000 feet, that's another story. what at this point is going through your mind? >> at this point i'm thinking, this can't be happening to me. >> if flight 1539's engines were no longer producing thrust, why wouldn't the plane have fallen from the sky, out of control in the simple aerodynamics? a plane with an engine failure can still be controlled

cbs news aviation and captain sully sullenberger standing by. first mark phillip at charles de gaulle airport outside of paris. mark, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, the ritual of tragedy i'm afraid is being repeated again in paris and cairo. this crash, as we know now, has taken place and egyptian ministry of aviation said the most likely cause is, in fact, terrorism. the bulk of the victims are egyptian and french. egyptair 804 left on time and regular route through the mediterranean, egypt and cairo. it last checked in with air traffic control while cruising at 37,000 feet in greek airspace. but as the plane was about to enter the egyptian controlled area over the mediterranean, radar images showed the plane went into a series of violent turns. first 90 degrees one way, then a full 360 degree circle the other while dropping precipitously. there was no further contact and the plane disappeared from the radar screen. egyptair said an emergency signal may have been sent from a beacon on board the plane. there were no weather issue

that aircraft is exactly the same type that was ditched in the hudson river by captain sullenberger a couple of years back so certainly is capable of doing that but the indications are that it came out of the sky and something other than a controllable form, if, in fact, one of the reports which we have not had confirmation of that there was a shadowy fading out of what we call a skim paint after the transponder stopped working if that is true and air traffic control did see some indication of something out there where the airplane was and then it faded away that's consistent with an airplane breaking up in flight. >> wow and that would be tragic indeed. john, this was an a-320 including by other carriers sump as gentlemenblue. what do we know about it. >> 320 is a sophisticated workhorse like the boeing 737 in terms of the fact there are thousands of them. they are in daily service over the planet. all the time and the philosophy is a little different, a little bit more oriented towards the automatic flight system than boeing but by the same token it's a very robust airplane. powered

john dickerson spoke with cbs news aviation and safety expert, captain sully sullenberger. >> investigatorsll be talking to as many people as they can. trying to interview any one who had anything to do with the flight. any one who touched the airplane. i should till you that -- as aviation safety has become better, and accidents have become more rare. their causes have become more unique. because aviation has done a good job of reducing eliminating what used to be many common causes of accidents. what we are left with is more black swan events. they will be looking in many different areas. as aviation safety has gotten better, there has to be more focus on aviation security. whether or not this happens to be intentional act or not. for 30 years one of my biggest concerns is what would be called all the activities behind the scenes in the back of the house. so to speak. people who service and clean and cater the airplane. some times the services are outsourced to third party vendors they have high turnover. whether this is a terrorism event or not. global experience tells us we need to look
