respond if you would to captain sullenberger. >> i actually spoke with sully yesterday.good discussion and it is interesting when i started in this position july 1 of this year, i brought a risk-based, intelligence-driven approach of how we go about our job trying to find the best possible security. the question is what is the best way of implementing some of this risk-based approach. >> in the short version what's the drill, i fly, i walk up, what's about to take place? >> so we have advanced imaging technology in about 80 airports now and if you go there and want to opt-out of that ait machine, then you go through the walk-through metal detector and you would receive what we describe as a thorough patdown f want to go through the ait or walk-through metal detector and no alarms no alerts then there is no patdown. so, that is the basic process, the best way people can prepare is make sure they have everything out of their pockets and nothing in there that would showed up on the advanced imaging technology machinement. >> relative to the full body scan, have you fully ve

joining us right now captain sully sullenberger of the here e of the now miracle on the hudson flightd morning, good to be with you. >> i know you're in washington talking about pilots flying tired, fatigued. very important issue. what should the public know about this? >> well, they should know that it's an issue that directly affects everyone who travels, not just pilots but all our passengers. the current rest rules have not been updated in over a generation and right now the faa is in the process of updating those rules and it's very important that we get this change right because everyone who flies will be living with these new rules for decades to come. and some proposals in this new rule are good. some absolutely are not and are a giant step backward. one in particular, unbelievably to me is a proposal to increase to up to 25% the amount of time pilots would fly a day from eight hours of flying to ten hours of flying and i can tell you from my own personal experience and just from common sense that flying more hours per day is not the answer to solving pilot fatigue. >> i wonde

. >> joining us right now, chelsea sully sullenberger pilot of the miracle flight on the hudson.sure you just heard that john pistole does not want to change these screening procedures. do you think they should be changed? >> good morning, great to be with you. airline pilots do have concerns about the screening procedures. first, they're not an effective use of our limited resources. we need to do much better job of taking a risk-based approach and i think since airline pilots are already the last line of defense in defending the caulk pilt against those who might use it for ill and since we're very trusted partners in this important security process, i think we need to be treated as such. and we already have the means. if the tsa would use to use it and implement it nationwide to identify and verify each pilot's identity and identify their current employment status and that is much more efebtive at meeting any possible threat and concerns about the radiation exposure. you have to realize that compared to someone working on the ground that has all the earth's atmosphere above th

pilots, lawsuits out there, and even sully sullenberger has spoken out about this. say today to calm all this outrage? >> reporter: i doubt it. having served in the white house in the prior administration, when you are trying to catch up to the story, you have lost it. the problem government typically has is they institute these measures after there's been some attempted attack, and the american people sort of think that the government fails the common sense test. if this was necessary, why weren't you doing it before, and if you're going to do it, why don't you explain to me how this reduces the threat and protects me before you institute it? so here we are. they instituted the procedures and used the back scatter and now they're trying to catch up to the story and explain it to people after we see the horror story like you showed. there is a real aviation threat. al qaeda is obsessed with using airplanes as a means of attack. they do need to use the measures. it the people standing at the checkpoints aren't reviewing the images. they have done what they can with t

here's the take of chesley sully sullenberger, the u.s. airways pilot who saved his crew and passengers when he was forced to ditch his plane in the hudson river in january of last year. >> as a matter of fact, my wife and i traveled just recently and she underwent such a screening where she was touched in sensitive places. but i can tell you again from my perspective as an airline pilot for over three decades that this just isn't an efficient use of our resources. >> all right. now there's an interesting argument. it's not an efficient use of our resources. that is not necessarily the argument that is taking root in certain corners of america. i want to bring in josh levs following this very closely. because there's a real ground swell movement against what the tsa is doing. and that's not the argument they're using. what are they saying? >> what they're saying and a lot of people are upset about the advance imaging technology and they feel it's too invasive, intrusive. there's a website called optoutday.com. there's another one here that

prominent pilots including the heads of the unions and also sully sullenberger, the famous pilot, hasing about these new security procedures. >> he's officially been saying, look, you're handing us the biggest weapon you could possibly hand us in the sky, why do i need to be doing through the pat-downs and the full body screening like everyone else when you're entrusting me with a plane? >> exactly. they say we are partners in security. many pilots have been trained to use firearms in the aircraft. they're saying come on, guys, we're with you, not against you. can't we work on a better way so we don't have to go through these machines and through the pat-downs? they've been particularly concerned about the machines because they traveled so, so much and there is still as you know a very active debate about the radiation levels in the body scanning machines and they voiced concerns because they have to go through them so often and get exposed to radiation when they're up in the air. >> news just in from the tsa. jeanne meserve, thanks for sticking around. appreciate it. >> you bet. >>>
