summitt has won more games than anyone else in women's basketball, including eight national titles. those are some of the day's major stories. now, back to jeff. >> brown: and to the coming of hurricane irene. the storm bulked up today and headed toward the u.s. mainland. >> brown: palm trees still whipped in the wind and rain today and waves battered white sand beaches, after irene marched through the turks and caicos islands chain overnight. flooding from the storm displaced hundreds of people in the dominican republic. and even though cuba was out of the direct path, the storm sent waves crashing over a seawall in baracoa. today, the bahamas began feeling the effects, as the season's first atlantic hurricane reached category three status with winds topping 120 miles an hour. next in irene's sights after the islands of the caribbean: the eastern seaboard of the u.s., especially the north carolina coast, where people were already stocking up on emergency supplies. >> last time, we had an outage, the tornado, we had no radio. so we thought now's the time to make sure we do. >> brown

we know in her case, summitt's case her maternal grandmother suffered from this as well so at 59 it'sunusual but across the board all dementias, only about 5% occur in people this young, typically you have memory loss, personality changes, people become withdrawn, some of the early signs. she was missing appointments, had to ask the same person, her son in this case the same question several times to get an answer, remember an answer, and that's what sort of tipped her off. when people go see the doctor, typically what happens is the doctor may first get a scan of the brain to make sure something else isn't happening, and then after that a series of cognitive exams, neurological exams that ultimately make the diagnosis of dementia. there are more advanced testings, pet scans, analysis of cerebral spinal fluid but at this point in time this diagnosis is usually made clinically through a series of exams. someone says i'm going to do mental exercises including reading before bed to try and stave this off and there's plenty of evidence to suggest that can help slow down the progression an

and summitt said yeah, but texas, y'all been creating jobs for 20 years. and you know what? as paul harvey might say, that's, let's get to the rest of the story. and the rest of the story is this. under the two governors before me texas didn't create jobs. 10% of what the country gained, because of the entire nation was creating jobs in the '90s. since i've become governor of texas has created more than 1 million jobs while the rest of the country loss 2.5 million. the difference is we weren't writing an american wave of prosperity. we were swimming against the current. the point is not to brag. the point is to say as a nation we can, we must do better. and when i'm president we will.
