we brought the show to sundance.right here is the beating heart of the film business, especially the documentary film business, which is getting more attention than ever, thanks to streams services like netflix, channels like this one. earlier being i went to catch up with a couple of park city reporters who explained the significance of the festival. >> three decades ago, actor robert red ford and a few filmmaker friends got together to develop independent film projects. >> i came here because of the beauty. i came here because of the state's particular history, pioneer history of the i wanted to preserve that at sundance but also i wanted to add something that would create a new dimension. utah, let's put it in the middle of winter. make it weird. make it weird and strange. >> now celebrating his 30th anniversary, his film festival, leading independent film in the world. small mountain town gets taken over by filmmakers, buyers and ordinary film fans. >> it's tough to get around. you go from small town feel to rush

over 8,000 films are submitted every year to sundance. then there's kind of another tier the festival doesn't like to talk about too much but ends up making up a lot of films in the festival, people who know people, connected with other projects going on with sundance outside of the festival itself who have the right agent, right person. those have a little bit of influence going into it but it's a mixture, 80% somebody who knew somebody and 20% things that just came over the transom. >> connections with people who came over the transom but what about the time? why do people jockey for screen dates? >> it's a jockeying to get in early. almost all the action really happens in the first four or five days. by tuesday the city starts emptying out essentially. you can go in main street in park city, unwalkable and then all of a sudden you can eat in any restaurant you want. it changes completely. if you are not there the first three or four days you're likely not to be a sold movie coming to sundance. >> what are some of the films we all know

i remember at one time sundance was an upstart.ot sound like it anymore. 7000 sounds like establishment. >> it is establishment, but because it is such a high risk investment and environment, just getting into sundance is a great step of approval. >> tv is doing so well. there are so many great tv shows on. how does that change the kind of film being brought to festivals? >> you have a wonderful independent filmmaker who makes the first film, like lena dunham , "tiny furniture," and then she went on to do "girls." ibo are seeing that the film model is not really working, so they are working on tv or figuring out ways to connect with their audiences more directly. >> are the films getting better because of tv? >> i think they need to and some are, but there is a lot of films that are made that honestly are not great, but you never know. >> what about the fact that we to seeing cable networks sundance? cnn has made it clear they are in the market to buy films. only ones?e is this new? >> there are amazing documentaries out there. sun

if you were watching the show last week, you know i was in park city, utah for sundance film festivalre i left i had a chance to sit down with robert redford, the founder of the festival, who's now executive producing two television series here for cnn. there were a lot of highlights and i wanted to show a couple today including his thoughts on this year's festival and his views of president obama. >> bob, thanks for joining me. >> my pleasure. >> one of the films you see at sundance every other year are your favorites-r they the more timely ones, ones about current affairs like syria, for example? >> no. i think the value for me with the films is when i see evidence of innovation. i see new ways of telling stories. whether it's cinematographically, whether it's using the camera -- >> you haven't seen everything? >> no. there's no way i could see everything. that's one of the frustrations of being here at a festival i started back in 1985, when we had one theater and we had maybe 25 or 30 films. maybe two or three documentaries. and just a few people wandering around the streets. and
