you go down and before you get to the reservoir down there it is called sunol regional wilderness park. that is where the majority of the acreage is burning. the winds they are 10-15 miles an hour. you can see the wind indicator, we have a 12 mile-an-hour breeze on the fire right now. it is not terribly strong. if anything there is good news on that. more perspective on this. i want to give you another vantage point on what it looks like in map, that is satellite detection for heat signatures. it is not a fire line. we will keep an eye on this obviously t. is wilderness and that is a good thing right now in terms of any homes, we don't know of any evacuation orders on that. a relatively new one. just started in the afternoon. earlier today we had another fire on the other side of the bay. this one was on, just on the delta side. as we were watching the plume of spoke in the foreground you can almost get distracted by that. and that is actually the nibulous cloud. it was sparked by the park fire. on the other side of the state. that was so high in the terms of putting the smoke in the a

coming south through sunol. your alternates are niles canyon to get you through the area, or 880, which is now starting to recover from an earlier truck fire we had as well in the area. this will probably be there till noon, but we'll keep updating you back to you. well, turning now to a historic announcement by the u.s. navy. it's around 256 black sailors unjustly punished for refusing to turn to work. this is all followed a deadly ammunitions explosion at the port chicago naval base in 1944. white surviving officers were given hardship leave, while those black sailors were told to return to work. this despite them saying that they never received proper training to handle the ammunition. a majority of those black sailors returned after threats of disciplinary action, but they were still court martialed. well, yesterday, on the 80th anniversary of port chicago explosion, the u.s. navy exonerated all of those sailors. one of the people spearheading that effort for the exoneration in the east bay is u.s. congressm

it was an intense day for firefighters as they battled fires from gilroy on up to sunol.e's nbc bay area's marianne favro is a cal fire helicopter dropping water on a fire in gilroy this afternoon near christmas hill park. the flames moving quickly through the tinder dry brush. at one point, the fire jumped the levee and started heading toward these homes. that's when people were asked to evacuate. i had never seen that close and they were red. you know, they were red and they were very flaming. and a lot of smoke. we did everything we could. anthony maldonado jumped in to help watering down the roof. the flames went up and, you know, there was a tree that just went up in flames. and so we're like, oh, what do we do, you know, ash coming down and so it was it was a pretty hectic gilroy fire says additional assistance from mutual aid, cal fire engines and the air attack helped them control the fire at about seven acres. but in sunol, where flames have consumed more than 700 acres near welch creek road, firefighters are still in an intense battle. the fire is only 10% conta

this is in the special recall election involving two trustees on the sunol school board. are both losing their recall elections by significant margins each last year voted to ban the pride flag flying at sunol glenn school. a third trustee voted against that ban is not being recalled. the district will now have to hold a special election to replace those two trustees. all this heat wave is forcing some cities in the bay area to cancel their fireworks show or parades this 4th of july, but not in danville. yeah, and that's where we find today in the bay's bob redell. this morning. and, bob, i know the town is still expecting thousands of people there for this morning's parade. yeah. and this is a tradition here in danville that's been going on for decades. and people here take it very seriously. there's a man and woman just off camera behind me. they are waiting for this side street to shut down at 6:00. the man has been out here since 5:00, so they can move their pop up tent out there and put up an encampment and be first here along the parade route. and you can see other

yeah today in the bay's bob redell joining us live from sunol. this is where a number of parks are reopening today. now, bob, i know a lot of folks will still need to be careful out there because it's still going to be hot. it is. it's going to be in the upper 90s as opposed to triple digits. so we will get back to those triple digits later in the week, as kari has been mentioning. so yes, it's still going to be hot, but pleasanton ridge behind me, one of the east bay regional park district's locations reopened actually yesterday, as well as roughly 30 of their other locations that had been shut down since last tuesday due to the excessive heat and the concerns over wildfire danger. now, there are still some restrictions as people return to the parks to hike, bike or do other activities. there are no open fires or barbecues allowed, only gas fueled stoves. people should secure their toe chains so they don't spark and possibly start a fire, and you're only allowed to drive on designated roadways. the temperatures have dropped, the humidity has ret

the creek fire has been burning in sunol regional park since friday afternoon. it's grown to more than 730 acres. cal fire says it's now 35% contained in the last couple of days, we've had a nice cooling trend, >> let us really get in there and put the boots on the ground and try to improve our control lines. we'll be here for the next few days with the heavy footprint in there, trying to make sure that we get line all around it and get control of the fire. >> cal fire says some evacuation orders and road closures remain in place in the fire zone. crews also getting the upper hand on a weekend fire in contra costa county. the point fire started friday afternoon near the city line between bay point and concord, grew to more than 470 acres, cal fire says the containment is now up to 92%. mandatory evacuation orders were issued for about 100 homes in the area. they have since been lifted. republican vice presidential nominee j.d. vance is set to make an appearance in palo alto tonight. it will be at a fundraiser hosted by bitgo chief executive officer mike belsky.

we've seen some 20 and some 30 mile an hour gusts near sunol in around that fire. some 20 to 26 mile an hour gusts there right now. but you can see the candidates play a big part of it. look at calaveras road. you see more of west southwesterly wind and then you look in the valley itself and all of a sudden you're getting almost a north-northeast of westerly wind, a big change in that because of all the topography around that fire. and that's what makes it difficult. the fight these fires in these canyons because the wind really changes direction throughout. that makes it hard for firefighters know which way that fire is going to spread. the good news is, though, as we are seeing higher humidity right now, not only here but around much of the state and that has helped firefighters of the fires have slowed in their burning process. you see the fire in northern california park fire continuing to burn their all that smoke heading eastward. the temperatures. yeah, a little bit hotter out there again today. numbers begin to spike in the mid 90's. the hottest spots they'
