carville wasn't only out there in the outer sunset. other little communities came up here and there all across the united states, actually. but after the earthquake and fire, 1906 earthquake and fire, there was a little sister community, you might call, called carzonia. and this was a dr. charles cross set up 10 old cable cars on california street. between california and cornwall street, fifth avenue and fourth avenue in the richmond district. he assured the neighbors who were very agast at the idea of these old cable cars being set up that they would be very tasteful and artistic. and essentially, yeah, it was like one room with a little bathroom attached made up of old cable cars. dr. cross thought he was hitting on something. there were hundreds of thousands of people who were homeless, looking for new places to live in the aftermath of the earthquake and fire. so he thought why not use these old cable cars. it only lasted about 10, 12 years. guess it wasn't a big hit. he built a more conventional apartment building after that to re

i primarily work in the sunset my nonprofit is sunset beacon center. elharris is sitting back there. let me talk about the safety network program. safety network program is a city wide program. we have a community organizer based in each san francisco neighborhood. there are 4 main components of each organizer's work. one is to build community capacity. another is sometimes we act as advocates for your communities and we try to use community based strategies to improve public safety and another roll we assume is we community to city departments to increase access to social services. i have brochures here if you want to learn more about the safety network program you can take a brochure. how my work relates to a neighborhood association is that a lot of times we would go to various neighborhood associations to try to collect community input on public safety issues and we would relate that back to mayor's office of criminal justice. some of the projects that are involved with that relates to community building is sunset community festival. fundraising ca

i live in the sunset and my kids pointed this out to me as the ninja house and orteega street and built in 1953 at the top of a cliff. isn't that wonderful? $11,000 for mr. r hess so people have said we have a lot of narrow buildings. i went out history and measured this building. it's 9 feet ten and a half inches wide. >> the lot is a little more. there is an inch and a half on both sides. >> this is a real landmark. >> there is the dog. >> there is the required dog and the reason this is in there it has a green roof. this is a little shed that somebody built it's under the 100 square feet requirement and below no permit is required and they built this artist studio with a green roof isn't that odd? gorgeous studio an. >> these are earthquake refugee shacks and they replaced the tent cities put up in parks and house the ten's of thousand's of refugees and wurn winter was approaching and decided they decided a more permanent way to house these people and they built these cottages in city parks and presidio park and of this amount there are 23, 24 that are certified to still be standing

in your typical san francisco home like in the sunset where you have a lot of the open basement garage areas, that's the area that i'm talking about. it's usually it's always at the lowest level of the building. you would go to the residential permit counter on the first floor and as i say it's over the counter permit approval and you just state on the application you are installing anchor bolts at the perimeter of the foundation. and you are also going to state that you are installing plywood sheathing at the -- at the bottom level of the building. on that permit will be -- if you come in on a monday morning you will leave on the monday morning with your building permit and start work any time. as long as you fill out the application completely. >> as i said, the general guidelines and tips for the voluntary strengtheng are adding bolts one size does not fit all. all buildings are different. i refer to the sunset richmond houses if you have a victorian there could be a crawl space and that space may be harder to do the work. i'm not saying you shouldn't do it but it may be a different

the sunset project was always an interesting project in terms of trying to maximize community hires. there was a lot of solar work that was owned by the electrician union. there was always going to be an issue about the kind of work that could be done. when the project was started there was a grievance filed by the electricians' union saying that more of the work that laborers were doing should be the jobs of electricians. settled not through a city process with the employer but outside contractors. after that happened, more work was set aside for electricians, but we were still hiring a number of laborers and meeting the requirements. claims were filed with the city office of labor enforcement, which enforces prevailing wage issues, saying that people who work laborers performing electricians work, they should have received electrician's salary for that. that report also seemed to go further in many minds to record that this work was and will be the work of electricians, which is where part of the dispute comes in. the contractor said that he could no longer meet the needs. three la

not similar but similar material and out there, out in the sunset, it's really -- even on hot tip galvanized, it's really rough. the salt air. wd-409 hinges, all the moving parts, the strike, everything you have to really maintain with oil, the wd-40 is a good example. and -- because they'll just lock up. freeze up. >> here's my favorite lubricant. i wish i had a bottle of it here. i go to the bicycle store and i buy lubricant for bicycle chains and bicycles. it has a much longer life than wd-40. wd-40 is thin. it's good for soaking into things. but the bicycle lock -- bicycle lubricant you'll find has a very long life a6 c1 long life, and usually it has a little tiny toes on the end. this stuff is great. it is much longer life. it is good all over the house, and it does not smell. we can divide the world into people who like the smell and do not like it. here is another problem. we brought along -- this is not the same thing. this is a huge distribution register, but it looks similar. when you use something on the exterior of the building, it will rust. has to be maintained. take robert bru
