in part because nobody would mess with suntrust.here along the line it changed. decided to expand too quickly. moving into florida, becoming a bloated institution. when the economy fell apart, suntrust long continued to be the equal if not exceeding wells fargo crashed and burned in totally spectacular fashion. now, however, there's a turn going on in the economy in the southeast. one of my favorite publications, i read it every day, "florida trend" magazine. they have a great website. it's the single best way to stay in touch with the florida region. and according to them, real estate prices for most of the state are beginning to pick up to the point where yours truly has been kicking the tires for florida real estate. while some parts, notably orlando, are still way too depressed, we're beginning to see job growth that could make florida -- are you ready, skeedaddy, the biggest comeback story of the year. suntrust isn't waiting for the good times to return. new ceo bill rogers working to cut $300 million in costs. i think he can t

suntrust isn't waiting for the good times to return. bill rogers working to cut about $300 million in costs. i think he can take out even more. the business of the region itself is getting better and better. commercial and industrial loans beginning to grow again. plus with the sudden increase in interest rates, suntrust can make more money off its deposits. something that's been completely lacking since the spectacular great recession banking crash. to me the bank was using earnings to stress test this great bank. and by the end of the third quarter i would not be surprised if suntrust went back to the fed, asked for permission to put through a nice size dividend, and it gets the nod of approval. given the fact that it sells at a tremendous discount in book value to most banks, even though it's tier one capital, its financial is much better than many others, i think buyers will continue to take suntrust up. i don't know if bank stocks can get back to $89. that's where it was five years ago. but i think half of that is a decent target o

the rms falling short include citigroup, ally finaial, suntrust, and meife. now, keep in mind, this is a worst-case scenario. the fed wanted to see how banks would fare if unemployment soared to 13%, stocks fell 50%, and home prices tanked by more than 20%. the stress tests were originally due out thursday afternoon, but around 3:30 today, j.p. morgan announced a dividend increase, which told investors it had indeed passed its stress test. that helped stocks close at their best levels of the day. the dow jumped almost 220 points, the nasdaq added 56, closing above the 3,000 level for the first time in 11 years, and the s&p rose almost 25 points. joining us now to discuss those stress tests, fred cannon, co-director of research and banking analyst at kbw. >> hi, how are you? >> susie: good, thank you. what do the tasks tell us about the strengths of the banking system? >> primarily they tell us that the bank that rebuilt the catal can with stab a very tough scenario, that's really the good news behind this, is that the capital levels are back at the banks. ove

i think suntrust is a different animal all together. it doesn't have some of the baggage that citigroup did. and suntrust is sort of unique in that it paid its tarp back late last year. unlike some of the other banks that paid it back in 2010. they had overhang from tarp repayment in 2011 and a dividend raise in august 2011 as well. i think they were a little overzealous with getting a capital plan out there that would get them back in line with bbnt. i like suntrust better than any of the four -- >> let me also just clarify what i said. forgive me for roping you in with the analyst community. you of course are a money manager, correct? >> yes, correct. >> citigroup, a good buy or great buy, as you say. is that a scenario where you see bank of america did the best coming out of the first stress test, now a real opportunity for ownership in citi shares as well? >> if you're looking in the short run, i don't think any of these banks will be the be all end all of trading vehicles. as we get more accustomed to the new normals with dodd-fran

we've had a sell on suntrust, which failed. and citi failed. i think citi failed because it asked for too much and maybe didn't have an appropriate accepts of what the fed was expecting. they can resubmit and pass. >> so you think citi has enough capital? >> i don't know that -- citi is -- citi's not creating a lot of capital. they still have that sizeable deferred tax asset. so the quality of their capital is not terrific. and they have risky assets, which is clearly demonstrated in the stress test. i found the stress test illuminating to read. in march of '08 when i first started coming on your show, i said the banks should trade at best tangible book. or a little bit better. but that doesn't mean they're off to the races and there's tremendous momentum behind the fundamental models of these banks. so they still have to hold more capital. the leverage is lower. which is a huge challenge to higher returns on capital. so you get -- you'll get long in the tooth these large cap banks, if you get, you know, 20%, 30% returns. because people are rea

one of the biggest failures, suntrust. my charitable trust, we've been buying suntrust. it's just not that bad. when even the failures go higher, you lose a ton of bearish ammo. they don't have a case. after the stress test results came out, they don't have it. we keep hearing the housing business hasn't turned, the good news is all anecdotal. i've been getting reports from home depot, lowe's and tractor supply, three housing and gasoline related plays that should be getting crushed, right? what am i hearing? that business is off the charts for the month of march. the numbers are so incredible that you know these runs are far from over. that's a slap right in the face of bears. if gasoline is so high, you want to cut out or cut back on discretionary spending, right? particularly food. but today chipotle and panera both his 52-week highs. so important in this market because the oils are becoming a bigger part of the s&p 500. given crude's decline today, you'd expect the stocks to get clobbered, right? but the vast majority moved up, led by deep water drillers of all thing

banks has been so powerful that it's lifted stocks of companies that failed the stress tests like suntrustgood bank. and i think this move, far from over. so how do we play this lazarus-like revival in the banks? you could just do the straightforward thing and buy the obvious, jpm, like we've been doing for my charitable trust at actionalertsplus.com. even after the stock's recent run, i think it's still worth buying. jpmorgan has probably made itself into the world's premier financial supermarket. but -- and this is a big but -- the kind sir mix-a-lot would love. the main reason they're recovering now as opposed to two years ago is the housing market. i'm blessing it, but you need to do it with the regionals. let me explain. as hard as it may be to believe in the past whenever we came out of a recession, the banks were the first sector to recover, what you wanted to reach for. typically they were the first group you wanted to buy. and the economy started to show signs of turning around. this time, though, we're buying the banks last because the great recession was different. in the great

allied financial action metlife and suntrust.n, can we breathe easier? >> yes, we can, obviously. j.p. morgan raised their dividend and announced a huge buyback of their stock. so have several other banks. everyone in wall street knows that citigroup has still a long way to go to get themselves straightened out. i'm not sure i know enough about the other two banks to speak of. yes, i think we do. let's not forget the stock market has raised the prices of equities back up within about 8% of the former peak in october 2007. so we are no, sir in the same dire straits we were in. unless there was some kind of international events, some kind of external events, like a war in the middle east or something 20 do with iran, that caused the price of oil to go to $200 a barrel and the stock market to go down by 50%, we do not face a huge big crisis with the banks here. we have come a long way in three years. we're not perfect. i don't think the governance has really improved that much. >> you don't think so? >> no, i don't. i don't think th
