supreme court. he is surely one of the most supreme court justices of the modern era, and his work will be studied by scholars for many, many years to come. i want to emphasize something else, and that is the length of his service and his dedication to an enormous number of cases. here are a few numbers. he served on the supreme court in an active capacity for 30 years. 266 opinions of the court, 544 opinions and all sat on more than 2500 cases. and although some of those are landmarks that will long be studied and long remembered, many of them are not glamorous, but every single one of them is a great effort in the product of a modern dedication. and before that, he sat for 12 years on the united states court of appeals for the ninth circuit, where he wrote 400 opinions. that was a lot of sacrifice on his part and a lot of sacrifice on the part of mary kennedy while he had his nose a buried -- his nose buried in the briefs. exemplifiesink this , it is the work of the thousands of judges in this country. an evenater -- and greater number of judicial staff employees, whose work is indispensable to kee
