cnn's gary tuckman joins us live from surabaya. and gary you reported earlier that the bodies that they are finding are giving a little more possible information to investigators. >> reporter: right. one of the three bodies that was recovered and identified today is the body of a flight attendant, the only male flight attendant on the flight. what that means is 31 bodies have been recovered, one fifth of the plane. but two of them are flight attendants. the idea that gives you is the likelihood that people who didn't have their seat belts on are the bodies being recovered. they've also recovered three people strapped to their seats in their seat belts. the seats had gotten away from the airplane. it's an indication that the plane may have come down in one big piece. because they think they will find a lot of bodies if divers can get under water and get to the airplane. they hoped today would be the day. the water is not that deep only about 100 feet deep. it's the nicest weather we've had, the only day i've been here that it hasn't

7:00 here in surabaya. i am outside the police hospital at the stanley crisis center. a couple of hours ago hearts turned heavy here. we have the first formal identification of one of the passengers on the flight. this is casket number 1, we saw that coming off of the plane on the tarmac on wednesday. in a very somber ceremony. she's no longer just a number. she's a name. she was number 108 on the passenger manifest. i.d.ed by a fingerprint match and i.d. card and a necklace with her initials. an hour after that paperwork and her remains were turned over to her family members and her brother and unfortunately as well as the case that we're seeing with many of the families who were traveling on that flight her husband and daughter were also on the plane. out in the search zone operations also continuing at this hour. but challenging weather conditions including reports of waves in the three to four-meter range as well as nightfall are hampering that. so the big priority now according to the mayor in surabaya

and will be investigating the airport authority here in surabaya. and will be looking at the general transportation office. that's quite a wide-ranging investigation. into exactly how it transpired. if airasia did not have a license to fly that route. they suspended all further flights between surabaya and singapore, for arabasia while the investigation gets under way. they will fully corporate with this investigation. and will not say anything until the results of that investigation are known. damaging for airasia they were flying unlicensed or without approval to fly that route on that specific day, given that 162 people are now presumed dead when the plane came down in the java sea. >> one of the pieces of the puzzle that needs an answer. andrew stevens in surabaya. >>> the ships looking for the missing plane, "the uss stinson" and "the uss ft. worth." the captain spoke with us earlier about the role they'll play in the search and recovery. >> our two ships that are committed right now, "ft. worth" and "sampson," they have three helicopters. both

we want to bring with cnn's andrew stevens in surabaya, indonesia.what you can tell us about the two new objects found in the java sea? >> reporter: well, christi, they're easily the biggest piece of debris so far picked up in the search for 8501. one was roughly 30 feet by 15 or 16 feet. a rectangular shape. and the other one was about 20 feet long. about two feet or so wide. now, we don't know exactly what they are. they were picked up on metal detection devices but there have been no eyes on them. the reason for that, as you said, the weather down there remains very, very tough indeed. we're talk about four-meter high waves. some pilots reporting five-meter high waves. strong waves and driving rain. the divers can't even get the remotely operated vehicle into the water to confirm what is down there. what those pieces of debris are. the hope is, they're going to provide a clue as to where the main part of the wreckage of 8501 is actually located. we still don't know. all we know, a few days ago, indonesia air force has shut down. this is the key be

cnn's david molko is live in surabaya, indonesia. david, bad weather forced crews to call off the search earlier. what's the forecast for the next search? >> reporter: that's right. about an hour to first light here in surabaya. the call to prayer sounding around the city. let's head out to the search zone. as you mentioned, weather creating some difficulties. there was a lot of news out of there, news about bodies recovered, extra debris. some airline seats. not the news that search officials were looking for, which was that they had found the main wreckage. jake the weather here is more in control than anything else. the good news the forecast expected to improve or be about the same for the next couple of days. turns out that the early morning hours, just about an hour from now, are the calmest on the java sea. the problem, we're in monsoon season. so things can change in the afternoon. you get a thunderstorm whipping up and the seas get choppy. again, below the surface, it's a visibility issue. divers down for the second day coul

these first two coffins came to shore in surabaya containing the bodies of a woman and a boy.hey will remain numbers until they are identified. seven bodies have been recovered so far but bad weather is forcing rescuers to stay on the ground. >> the weather is unfortunately not very good for the next two or three days. and that is slowing us down, but they did inform you that the ships are looking to operate 24 hours. >> the indonesian military was able to pinpoint the crash site quickly. several vessels are ready to take part in the search effort. the wreckage was found 160 kilometers southwest of central kalimantan province. that is just 10 kilometers from where the plane was when radio contact was lost on sunday. makeshift morgues have been set up on land. authorities are collecting dna samples from relatives to help identify crash victims. indonesia'president has asked rescue teams to make every effort to recover bodies so that grieving families can lay them to rest. >> i feel a deep gloss over this disaster. and i pray for the families to be given the strength to face the

i want to bring in david molko in surabaya for more.rasia handled the preflight weather information. we know the weather was crucial here. >> reporter: yeah john that's right. this just in. i want to be absolutely clear now. this is not necessarily about how the pilots of 8501 got their information. we don't have those details. what i can tell you is more information about how pilots at airasia got their weather information. what i'm holding up here this is a -- the actual report put out on december -- late on december 27th by indonesia's weather agency. this is actually -- shows cloud cover, wind speeds, all sorts of things. this is the information the pilots of 8501 would have had access to. what we're learning from the weather station officials here in surabaya is that area did not come up to pick up a paper copy. some airlines do. airasia did not. the airline says, however, that it got the report online the weather agency says it does put the full information on their website. and airlines can choose to download that instead. i just

an elementary school teacher living in surabaya.she was traveling with her husband, her mother-in-law, and her daughter when the plane crashed. she is the first to be identified. 002, a young man they have not yet been able to identify. the other bodies are beginning to come through. but the identification process it does take some time. >> has there been any progress on determining the cause of the crash? >> nothing official, but we have heard the least evidence coming out of the investigation suggesting absolutely extraordinary numbers on the street in which the plane has lifted into the air and then thrust downwards. numbers from an aviation expert i spoke to suggest the numbers he has seen suggest that this is either an absolutely massive weather system or something else that he cannot explain. it seems like the more we know actually, the more serious and unusual this event seems. >> now some of the world news in brief. more than 50 people killed in flooding and landslides caused by tropical storm in the philippines. weather war

>> gary tuckman in surabaya.> we have peter golds, we have david sousi and analyst miles o'brien back with us. you have the search and rescue right now, peter, and this is being complicated by really tough weather. could these rough weather conditions do you think, actually hinder not only the recovery but also the investigation? >> it slows it up and it post ds postpones the discovery of the main wreckage field. they need a few days of calm weather so the vessels with sonar can start their grid searches in the most high-target rich area. without that it's going to be slow going. >> will it disburse any of the wreckage or maybe damage it in a way that hinders to be able to figure out what happened? >> sure. it's going to disburse the lighter weight material. it's going to spread it out. some of the bodies may also be disbursed. it's going to make that part of the investigation challenging. but the critical evidence is still in one place and hopefully will be found soon. >> david sousi, one of the things we've bee
