rescuers continue searching in surfside, florida. champlaign towers south got a letter about decay in their building less than three months before this tragedy. the april letter warned, quote, the concrete deterioration is accelerating and the roof situation has gotten much worse. this, as families of the missing, are desperately seeking any information about their loved ones. at least 11 people are confirmed dead. they range in age from 26 years old to 82 years old, and 150 remain missing this morning. >> 150. as federal investigators and structural engineers converge on the scene, there are no clues about the building's structural integrity. these photos were taken 46 hours before the building collapsed by a contractor there to service the pool. he told the "miami herald" he saw standling water in the parking garage, and this, exposed and corroding rebar, those are metal bars within the concrete, in the concrete of the pool equipment room on the south side of the underground garage. our team is following all the latest developments

they want an audit because of what has happened at the site in surfside. they're asking for the support of city officials because the county doesn't have jurisdiction of the entire geographic area, so they're asking city officials to do the same thing so all of the buildings in miami-dade are covered. now, i did ask the fire chief about the new information that we are hearing from the structural report from october of 2018 that specifies that there was major structural damage to this building. i asked him if this has any impact in the search and rescue going on now. here's what he said. take a listen. >> yes, ma'am. everything impacts search and rescue efforts. just the magnitude of the collapse and type of collapse it is is one of the most difficult. we have been searching through any void or we have to shift based on circumstances and where we are looking. >> reporter: he didn't specify how the information is being used during the search right now. one of the commissioners did say he vows the county will do everything they can to make sure it doesn't hap

the site of the building collapse in the city of surfside. today, officials announced more victims have been recovered, raising the death toll to nine. >> cutting a deep trench to assist us, it's now 125 feet in length. into the pile, it's 20 feet wide. and 40 feet deep. now, this trench is very critical to the continuation of the search and rescue process. we have continued all night to build that trench. and as a result of that, we were able to recover four additional bodies in the rubble. as well as additional human remains. >> new reporting from npr reveals in 2018, the surfside town inspector told residents the building was safe. despite an engineer warning of major structural damage a month earlier. and while all of that will be investigated, officials are focusing now on saving lives if they can. and relocating building residents who survived. as of this moment, more than 150 people remain unaccounted for. among them is the daughter of rachel spiegel, who spoke earlier today with my colleague, alex witt. >> obviously, i'm disappointed

i'm wolf blitzer in surfside, florida.dly condo building collapse. rescuers are now on day six of their desperate, desperate search and rescue mission. we're learning that there were, there were several warning signs before this tragedy. cnn has now obtained a letter from the president of the condo board written back in april just a couple of months or so ago that one, the building's condition had deteriorated significantly in the three years since the engineer's report highlighted major structural damage. there are now growing concerns about the conditions of other old buildings here in south florida. the city of miami beach by the way is sending structural engineers to inspect over 500 buildings that are undergoing the 40-year recertification process. cnn's brian todd has more. >> municipalities on florida coast are scrambling to make sure the kind of collapse that happened in surfside, doesn't happen to them. cnn got exclusive access to the reinspection and repairs going on at the winston towers complex in sunny isles b

surfside 78 degrees. it feels like 81. take note of the easterly wind.t will increase through the course of the day as we get a gradual heating online that creates what we call a sea breeze and we sea the thundershowers become more numerous. you can see the hit or miss nature of the showers that move. in and let's get hyper local, and ability to do that with the radar and move into the surfside region and within the past 30 minutes or so, there was a shower and nothing concerning, this is the type of activity they expect to experience in the next 24 hours and beyond that, because of the transient environment taking place, it doesn't take much to fire off one of these thundershowers and of course, crews can work through rain but they can't work through lightning, that causes all kinds of safety hazards. not to mention these thundershowers that do form often in this part of the world in southeast florida can create what's called gusty winds, a gust front ahead of a thundershower, so any loose standing debris on a standing structure could that remains could

this is 1:30 a.m., surfside, florida, 55 units of a condo pancaked. florida's governor toured the disaster site a short time ago. >> we thank the fire and rescue for what they did to be able to put themselves on the line to help other folks. they're still hard at work. we still have hope to be able to identify additional survivors. >> county commissioners told cnn that 51 people are unaccounted for. she says it's possible they could be on vacation or simply away from their home. rescue teams saved 35 people from that 12-story building, another two from the rubble. not one of those was a 10-year-old boy and the man who found him said he first heard someone yelling. >> i could begin to hear him clearly and hereby his voice that he was a little boy, couldn't have been more than preteens. i saw an arm sticking out of the wreckage and he was screaming can you see me? so we started to climb up to him to try and see if we could get him free. but it was too heavy, too much rebar, stuff like that. it was going to take quite a bit of effort to get him out. he w
