susan: specifically this one. to imagine living through that how do you capture that without experiencing something that horrific in your own life? mary: well, i am an actor. i will say that any good actor can portray anything that can happen to a human being. susan: so i am asking for the secret to an actor's craft. mary: everyone goes about it a different way. when i was younger, it was about trying to re-create. i have been through more tragedies since then, more death and grief. i am not as surprised by tragic events. susan: is it different when you put the costume on? is it painful? mary: yes. yes and no. there is a hard time when you leave the rehearsal room. you have created everything with the rehearsal. you have a relationship to that skirt. you have put a lot of emotional investment into it. it can be very jarring actually. now that we are here and we are in it, it has been helpful. it is just how -- i have dreams about being in this time period. you know. you know? james: i feel very emotional watching

you know susan, the numbers that we referenced getting into the show are incomplete at best. but they certainly indicate that more military families could be hovering arrange the poverty line. is there an untold story here? >> i think there definitely is i think the biggest problem is anybody receiving welfare in general, usually feels a lot of shame and guilt. the fact that they are receiving it period is not something they want to share. so when it comes to the military, it definitely carries a higher amount of that. i know that we received them from about six months after he got here in tucson to about -- for about two and a half years continuing with that and the reason -- you know when we would go in to do any paperwork, anything like that. we were almost looked at to the point of why are you here? you should make enough money. and it was that way until they started to start counting our house. >> our community is having a back and forth here: so brandon, conflicting numbers, we have $106 million in food stamps redeemed this year. and there is a number that says that in

susan susan? >> thank you. now we have the minimum wage side of the story. kate? >> hiking entry level wages to $9 we decided to look at how the retail giant stacks up against other states nationwide. the current federal minimum wage is 7.25 an hour but national average minimum wage is 7.75 an hour after increased were voted in after midterm elections. as of january 2 1st, 29 states and territories have wages above the minimum federal wage. this remits 60% of the american work force. the map here, the states at the federal minimum wage above, blow, and states that just don't have a minimum wage at all. a few standouts here. washington state has the highest in the nation at $9.47 an hour. washington, d.c. on the high side as the district's rate at $9.50 an hour. oregon rate is the $9 preponderate 25 an hour. georgia and wyoming at $5.15, and states without wages at all is alabama, south carolina, mississippi, tennessee, and louisiana. now, of course begin walmart being a bell weather, small business advocacy group, federation of independent business says it adds pr

susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> reporter: lauren, good morning. that's right, a short-term extension at current funding levels is one option, although that would kick the can down the road. another option is unlinking immigration from the funding of the department of homeland security, but the two sides can't agree on that. so for now we have a new congress with an old story line, a shutdown showdown. >> in the affirmative, the motion is not agreed to. >> reporter: senate majority leader mitch mcconnell took a shot at trying to break the stalemate. democrats blocked consideration of a bill funding the department of homeland security for the fourth time monday. the bill is tied to a provision that would repeal president obama's executive actions which temporarily shields millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation. but democrats oppose the repeal. mcconnell now plans to separate the issues and introduce a standalone bill this week that would block the president's orders on immigration. >> it's another way to get the senate unstuck from a d
