you see, in 1872, then senator like sergeant matt susan b anthony in a chance encounter on a train. anthony had recently been arrested for illegally voting and was eager to pass the federal amendment to guarantee women the right to vote. she found a strong ally in sergeant. anthony and sergeant work together on what became known as the anthony amendment. the text was nearly identical to the words of the 15th amendment and it said that the right to vote should not be abridged by any state because of a person's sex. the anthony amendment did not receive a boat for 9 years. sergeant had already left office. but his help build the momentum behind this important movement. with a firm resolution and commitment, the amendment was introduced for 40 straight years. but the beginning of the end finally came in our very own chamber. not in the senate. republican representative james mann propose the resolution that became the 19th amendment on may 21, 1919, the day it passed. that is why we are here today. 100 years ago today, the decades of advocacy by the separate supporters paid off. 100 ye

as susan ware does in "why they marched," the exhibit looks beyond the familiar names of susan b anthony, elizabeth caddy stanton and alice paul and brings to our attention activist from a variety of backgrounds showing across race and class. susan ware, a pioneer in the field of women's history and leading feminist biographer, is the auditor and editor of numerous books on u.s. history, including american women's history, a very short introduction. still missing, amelia earhart and the search for modern feminism, and letter to the world, seven women who shipped the american century. educated at wellesley college and harvard university, she has taught at new york university and harvard where she served as editor of the biographical dictionary american women completing the 20th century. since 2012 she has served as general editor of the american national biography which has long been associated with , and has participated in our charade before creating this exhibit. ladies and gentlemen, please welcome susan ware.
