amy: that is a clip from a documentary about our guest susan burton. e also joined by michelle alexander, author of "the new jim crow." susan, talk about this new way of life. it is your nonprofit. anand what it is you are d doing with women who are coming out of prison right now. >> a new way of life is a safe house that women can come to after their release from prison in south los angeles. it is a place for women to detox the trauma, the torture of incarceration, be welcomed d and embrbraced and live and begin their nupathe to -- new path if it is to recovery or receiving mental health services, go back to school, get their children back, whatever their r goals are wewe support them to obtain n te goals. that we spend $60,000, $70,000, $80,000 he to incarcerate somomeone for mininr drugug charges or petty crimemed then put them on a bus and send them back to skid row without id, without government papers after years of torture and trauma inside of a prison system , and sasay "go makeke a life fr thatr selves" and give them $200 and nothing else. -- a

pleas welcome susan burton.ow. >> thank you. >> trevor: thank you for being here and thank you for sharing this amazing story with us in the book. your memoir, i had two books to read it was this and ivanka trump's. and she lived a tough life, but you have really dealt with a lot. you have really dealt with a lot. a story of a person not just going into the american prison system, going in and out of prison but then coming out and reforming your life. do you feel lucky every day that you were able to change that narrative? >> i feel very lucky. very grateful, and very blessed that i was able to change america, not only for my invest but for over a thousand women who have been through a new way of life and they have been able to change their narrative because they got basic supports after incarceration. >> trevor: right, and your story is one of, you know, it's a tale that is unfortunately all too common. a story of a person cycling in and out of prison, in and out of prison. in fact, in the book you talk about h
