now is my political panel, democratic strategist michael hardaway and republican strategist susan del perciome go right to it. earlier this week, and my capacity as a founding president of national action network, i condemned comments made by presidential candidate and former south governor nikki haley, in which she declined to say the civil war was fought over slavery. she later clarified comments, but the fact that she did not mention slavery at all, and a very long answer, i might add, about what caused civil war is pretty astonishing. i want to remind my viewers that this summer i took my daughters to the former plantation south carolina where my great-grandfather, coleman, was a slave. we stepped into the hood where he and an untold number of other slaves were held against their will. he worked that land and eventually separated when coleman was sent to florida to pay off a date for his slave owners. he received his freedom because the union won the civil war. yet, we are here more than 150 years later, still fighting for his memory as well as the countless black americans who never liv

political scientist and host of the blackest questions podcast, and my friend and colleague susan del percio, republican strategist and msnbc political analyst. good to have you both on. i'm so happy to have this discussion. susan, i want to start with you. the response to haley's comments seem like they may have helped her in terms of toeing the line in the republican party more than they hurt her. what does that say about where that party is and what they're trying to sort of hone in on as their core values? >> i think your opening said it perfectly. it is of right now the republican party is trying to whitewash history. and you know, again, you did it so well, i'm not going to get into the ethical lessons we have to learn because we know what they are. but politically, what's so interesting, charles, is i kept thinking of donald trump's question when he was questioned by chris matthews in the 2016 election, when he said, should the woman be punished, and donald trump looked around, he was wondering, he was thinking really hard, and he was just trying to figure out what would sound best. a

joining me now to discuss the impact of this proclamation, susan del percio is a republican strategistsnbc political analyst, and alicia krause is a democratic strategist and former obama campaign advisor. welcome to you both. micha, is it immediately clear how many people will be affected by these additional pardons. but can you speak to us about the potential impact on the broadest level? >> so, this is huge and as someone who used to work in criminal justice reform, many of the cases that came across my desk, the individuals that i was advocating for, where people who have been arrested and literally lost their lives due to simple marijuana charges. we are talking some people who had been in jails and in prisons as early as 15 years old on and up into the 30s and 40s. even though biden's move only affects those with federal charges, i think that it sends a message to the states, acknowledging that now, over 20 plus states have legalized marijuana and more are up and coming to do the same thing. it matters that we reduce the sentencing, especially because those of what you have been

republican strategist, and msnbc political analyst, susan del percio, and democratic strategist, andadviser, guy l. smith. this move by trump's lawyers was not exactly unexpected but did anything jump out to you about this new filing? >> one of the things that continues to puzzle me about trump's legal defense team in terms of the immunity argument is they aren't leaving room to craft that some things are subject to presidential immunity. and some are not. they are going for a home run, and trying to swing at the fences, all acts undertaken by a president while sitting in office are subject to presidential immunity, and i think that's a bad approach. they're not giving the court a modicum to have a compromise. they might be able to find some degree of success. they aren't doing that. they're going pretty much in a binary model, zero su it all goes. it's all immune. i don't think that's the appropriate way to attack this sort of problem or legal issue. >> i wonder if you were surprised that the supreme court did not agree to hear this case right now and does that give you any indicati

brewster in tuscaloosa and former senior advisor to the biden 2020 campaign, alencia johnson and susan del perciow does nikki haley think she did? how do the analysts think she did yesterday? >> reporter: that ad is returning some of the fire against ron desantis last night, mocking him throughout that ad. you listen to haley and her campaign, they feel good about at least how she performed last night. they acknowledge, she was on the defensive most of the night. but if you listen to what haley is saying, she's saying it's because she's surging in the polls, she's rising in the polls and other candidates feel threatened. that's relative when you look at the same polls and see donald trump's dominance in them. you saw nikki haley having to battle on multiple fronts. you saw her defend her foreign policy record, defend some comments she made about the app tiktok. you heard her go after or be attacks on some of her connections, her corporate connections, including donor endorsements that came in the lead-up to the debate. she explained it a little bit. listen to a little bit. >> in terms of the dono

. >> let's turn to barbara mcquade and susan del percio.t general election here. what's your reaction? is this the right call? >> the maine secretary of state found this on her plate. this is not something she endeavored to do on her own. she has an obligation under maine law to resolve challenges to petitions. donald trump certified that he was qualified to be on the ballot. someone challenged that, so she had the obligation to resolve that challenge. she methodically went through the 14th amendment and conclude ed he had engaged in insurrection. she looked at the hearing and report of the january 6th committee to reach that conclusion. this is temporary, because it gets reviewed by a court. she's done her job, and now it moves onto the courts in maine. >> ultimately as with the case in colorado and several others now will end up at the united states supreme court with some urgency to it. how quickly do you see this proceeding through the supreme court? >> i think the supreme court has to take this up and quickly, as you say. there has bee
