herman cain says he'll decide by next week whether to continue his campaign. his decision apparently hinges on a critical meeting tomorrow with his wife. susan mcginnis is in washington with details. >> reporter: they have only spoken by phone since monday. herman cain has not talked to his wife in person since these new allegations came to light. meanwhile, his political losses seem to be turning into gains for another candidate. herman cain isn't ready to call it quits. >> it ain't over until it's over and it ain't over yet. >> reporter: wednesday, he told new hampshire supporters he'll decide whether to continue his white house run after talking to his wife in person tomorrow. the republican hopeful hasn't seen gloria cain since allegations of infidelity first surfaced monday. >> since i've been campaigning all week, i haven't had an opportunity to sit down with her and walk through this with my wife and my family. >> reporter: the onetime gop front-runner has denied having a 13-year affair and while he admits his fund-raising contributions have taken a hit, most supporters appear to be sticking with him for now. newt gingrich has gained

herman cain, the republican candidate for president decided he is suspending his campaign for right now after all the controversy. we're going to talk about what is left and where it goes. susanis the washington bureau chief for u.s.a. today and frank newport is editor in chief at gallop. and i mean, he was a front runner for a minute, but does herman cain have any support left? >> not very many supporters. and not only have his supporters gone away, but his momentum gone away to newt gingrich. now at the top of national polls. >> he is ahead of romney, who has been mr. steady. talk about the comparison in the latest numbers to come out, frank. >> latest numbers will come out tomorrow, tuesday. but in general, it looks like we're going to show gingrich comfortably ahead. romney isn't moving. all these people swirl around him, his numbers stay the same. as these others have fallen, we'll be showing that newt gingrich has taken a lead. he is now the candidate who is number one nationally. >> now this is national polls. so are there any numbers that show who is ahead? >> yeah. there have been polls out over the weekend in iowa and new hampshire. in new hampshire, it's romney. in

script for what not to do and a sort of morality lessons for the future it is herman cain. >> i have to ask you this, susand one man who he had paid over the years or are there two women that you have heard of in terms of the payment? >> i have heard -- i have heard of two women. i have heard of the affair. and then you have a couple more women who have come out and it is just all messy. just as bad, heather, not to con done that, he had to come out and instead of playing victim and pointing fingers saying look, i made mistakes, i learned my lesson. i'm he sorry for the injury i caused. what he did instead in denying it and stonewalling and attacking the press and attacking rick perry and attacking his opponents was he turned a bad story into a disaster. once you do that in politics you are dead. >> we have a graphic on the screen of all of the allegations of sexual harassment and 13 year affair, all of which he denies, we should also say that. it as mess. it as huge mess. he is now saying that he is going to suspend his candidacy. let's move it forward. who benefits the most from this? >> the two that --

sogginess to i mean years and years ago i read that susan levy who divorced papers after he was why should you say i said i can't choices about herman i mean i didn't and his latest accuser only came and only came out a couple days ago i think the problem with herman cain i don't look herman cain had i was problematic on a number of levels but any of these phrases problems as far as being the next president didn't have anything to do i don't see it was ever seriously running for does i think he's going to forever serial cells but it appears my serious question is and let me just rephrase it why is it that massaging me doesn't seem to upset the republican base whether it's new or this guy and and extramarital affairs make them crazy as they did with bill clinton as they are now that i mean that's why this example isn't good because because which is the wage sexual harassment happened to the allegations of the sexual harassment happened then within a couple weeks herman cain had fallen from the poll so to your question your question i don't think is is back there what i argued that he would fall from the polls regardless and it just s

susan, we have been to this rodeo before. we saw the rise and fall of michele bachmann, rick perry and herman cain. now the rise and slide newt gingrich. what's behind all this? >> i think you have probably at least have maybe a majority of republican primary and caucus goers who want some alternative to mitt romney. they've gone from one of these social conservative candidates to another. each has been found wanting. so they go on to the next one. this could end up with romney's nomination because there are too many of the candidates dividing up this part of the republican electorate. >> ifill: we still see other people who seem to be benefiting. rick santorum got a big conservative endorsement and ron paul does consistently well in these polls. he always seems to be a factor. there's worry that he might actually win in iowa, worry amongst republicans. >> people are falling off gingrich. they didn't really examine him before they decided to support him. now he's being attacked across the board in a variety of ways particularly as being a washington insider and not a conservative. conservatives are
